Research Notes

  • None of the present citations or mentions confirm a name of William. One of the citations was conflated with his son, Richard William and has been below reformatted for clarity and cross-referenced with SAR data.
  • Update 6/14/2022: The "History and genealogies of the families of Miller, Woods, Harris, Wallace, Maupin, Oldham, Kavanaugh, and Brown" named the husband of Miss Bayse as William. See the Genealogical Table. William and (probable first name) Elizabeth's children were: Jesse married Elizabeth Simpson, Maj George, Moses married Mary Rice, Conway, James, Richard married Ann Pepper, Capt John married Annis Rice, William, Judith married Fisher R Bennett, Elizabeth married a Pepper, and a daughter married a Battershell. The same source identified William's father as Col Samuel Oldham: "If the Tree, and the tradition aforesaid be true, which the writer is unable to confute, then beyond any question William Oldham, of Prince William County, aforesaid, the father of Captain John Oldham was a son of Colonel Samuel Oldham and Elizabeth Newton his wife of Westmoreland County, Va., whose lineage according to the Oldham Tree, runs back to the youth, John Oldham, who was brought from London, England in the Elizabeth and Ann in 1635, who was a son of John, of Plymouth."
  • Prince William did not exist in 1712; defaulting to Northumberland, Virginia as the birth location (which is shown on FamilySearch); however, it should be noted that the FindAGrave memorial (unreliable because it uses William Richard?) says Farnham, Westmoreland County.

Richard Oldham who married Elizabeth Basye is the son of John Oldham

posted by Janne (Shoults) Gorman
According to "History and genealogies of the families of Miller, Woods, Harris, Wallace, Maupin, Oldham, Kavanaugh, and Brown" (available on Ancestry or https://archive.org/details/historygenealogie00mill) Charles is not listed as a son of William Richard and Elizabeth (Bayse) Oldham. All other children are listed correctly (Jesse and George are listed twice and should be merged).

The same source identified William's father as Col Sam Oldham first wife unknown, second wife Elizabeth Newton. The line of descent would be: Wm Richard 1712-1785/Elizabeth Bayse from Col Sam/Eliz Stark Newton from Thomas 1655/ Rachel Minshall Taylor from John Jr 1622/Mary Smith from John 1592.

The above mentioned Membership Application of Robert Charles Wilson, no. 77124 shows Samuel Oldham and Eliz Newton as parents to William/Eliz Bayse.
