A misunderstanding of an old-form reference to a father-in-law -- in this case meaning stepfather, rather than father-in-law in the modern sense -- led to an assumption registered in the original form of this profile: that Mary's maiden surname was Oldham. Her name at birth is in fact not known.[1] Therefore the parents originally shown, John Oldham and Unknown (Unknown) Oldham, have been detached.
Biography
Mary, wife of William Briggs, was born in England, likely about 1622 based on her minimum age at the time of the birth of the couple's first known child (about 1640); her maiden surname is not known. Following their move to Lyme, Connecticut, she is thought to have passed away in the weeks between 15 December 1670 -- when she co-signed a deed with her husband, by mark -- and 4 January 1671, when another deed was executed without her mark.[2]

Thanks, Jack. Parents detached. I've sent a request to join Mary's (and William's) Trusted Lists. [I carelessly inserted "John" in place of "William" in at least one of those requests... have been simultaneously working on the lineage of the late John DeQuedville Briggs, Jr., whose family are old friends of my family.]
Given the discussion below, I propose to edit this profile so it represents Mary (Unknown) Briggs, the correct classification for the wife of William Briggs, Sr., whose wife's maiden surname is _not_ known.
This will include disconnecting this profile from John Oldham & Unknown (Unknown) Oldham as parents.
I agree. Looking at the NEHGR article mentioned it appears her name is unknown. I think there's some confusion because the was a William Bridges who was the stepson of John Oldham. I think some of the records have been misinterpretted mean that he was married to an Oldham daughter, and then some confusion between Bridges/Briggs happened along the way.
John Oldham does not have any known children, so I'd suggest disconnecting Mary as a daughter and changing her LNAB. Anyone have an objection?
[Last par. edited] Totally agree. In The Great Migration Begins (see https://www.americanancestors.org/databases/great-migration-begins-immigrants-to-ne-1620-1633-vols-i-iii/image?volumeId=12107&pageName=233&rId=23894592 ; subscription), Anderson & co. make a clear distinction between William _Bridges_ of Charlestown (and wife Persis (Pierce) Bridges), and William _Briggs_ of Boston, with wife Mary... no maiden surname given. The confusion arises because William _Bridges_ notes that he came across from England in the company of his "father-in-law" John Oldham; but the modern interpretation of "father-in-law" has been imposed, when in fact Bridges meant "stepfather".
William and Mary _Briggs_ are among my 8th great grandparents, and of course I'd like to know Mary's identity. This, alas, is not it. This profile should be converted to represent Mary (Unknown) Briggs.
John Oldham's wife, per that same Anderson entry, is correctly represented as Unknown-384865: a widowed-and-remarried woman with the first-marriage surname of Bridges -- i.e., the mother of William Bridges: Unknown (Unknown) [Bridges] Oldham. Mary -- not her daughter, but rather the wife of William Briggs -- should be disconnected from that profile.
