Biography

Cheshire (historic flag)
James Oldham was born in Disley, Cheshire, England.

Family

Birth

James's birth was registered between April and June 1845 in the Stockport registration district (which included the village of Disley). [1] He was the son of Edmund Oldham and Frances Sutcliffe.

Siblings

  1. Thomas Oldham (1851-1902)
  2. Edmund Oldham (1858 - Unknown)

Although James was born in Disley, Cheshire (a small village), his parents and siblings were all born in industrial areas of Lancashire. There does not seem to be any other connection with Cheshire.

Marriage to Elizabeth

1868. Rochdale, Lancashire, England. [2]

Husband - James Oldham
Wife - Elizabeth Griffiths
Child - Arthur Griffiths Oldham

James Oldham married Elizabeth Griffiths between July and September 1868 at Rochdale Register Office or a Registrar Attended Location. [3] He was 23 at the time of marriage, and Elizabeth was 20. It seems likely that James was following a non-Conformist religion such as Methodism as he did not marry in an Anglican church. There does not seem to be an Anglican baptism for James nor for his son Arthur.

Marriage to Martha

James married Martha Chesshyre on 29 April 1910 in St Matthew, Stretford, Lancashire, England. Martha was the widow of Charles Herbert Chesshyre. She was the daughter of John Cox. His father Edmund was noted to be a "block printer".[4]

INFERIOR MILK - A DERBYSHIRE FARMER FINED
At the Manchester Police Court, this morning, before Messrs. C. H. Rickards and Thomas Johnson, Thomas Moseley, farmer, Cowdale, Buxton, was charged by the Manchester Corporation with consigning to James Oldham, milk dealer, Rochdale Road, milk for sale in Manchester on the 2nd August last from which 20 per cent of fat had been abstracted. Mr. R. Cobbett appeared for defendant. The defence was that the milk was simply poor, and no water had been added, and that its inferior condition was owing to the late season of wet weather. Mr Inspector Edwards had, however, subsequently taken milk from some of the defendant’s cows and this, when analysed by Mr. Estcourt, was found to be of pure quality. The Bench considered the charge proved, and inflicted a fine of £10 and costs. [13]

James Oldham is not related to me but formed part of a training project. I'm quite happy to look after his profile for now but if he is a relative for someone then I'll be pleased to pass him on.
