Biography

Bartley and Tabitha Oliver married 10 Jan 1811 in Elbert, GA. They moved to this area of MS when a number of other families moved here from SW GA. The area became know as the Georgia Ridge.

Bartley and Tabitha Higginbotham owned the land surrounding Eavenson Cemetery. On Dec 1, 1856 Bartley & Tabitha sold 200 acres of this land to their son, Seaborn J. for $750. The same day, Seaborn J. and wife, Nancy Waldrop Higginbotham sold the same "200 acres with the reservation of half acre where the grave yard is situated" to Seaborn's brother-in-law, Willis Eavenson for $2,000. Thus the "grave yard" mentioned in this 1856 deed eventually became known as Eavenson Cemetery rather than Higginbotham Cemetery. Unless an owner previous to the Higginbothams established this grave yard, Bartley and Tabitha were the original family to establish this community "grave yard" on their farm. These deeds can be located at the Desoto Co Courthouse. Likely copies also exist at the Tate Co Courthouse.

Tabitha will is dated 15 Jan 1861. Desoto County Probate Court recorded and probated her will at the March 1861 term. Her son, Seaborn J. Higginbotham was appointed by the courts as Administrator of her estate.
