1901 census: Harry Oliver was living in East End at Swerford with his widowed grandmother Sarah Johnson. His age was given as 20, implying a birth date in 1880 or 1881. His birthplace was given as Swerford, Oxfordshire. He was employed as a general labourer on a farm. [4]
First marriage: Henry Oliver (bachelor, aged 21), a labourer, of Swerford, son of Henry Oliver, labourer; and Emily Kate Murrey Best (spinster, aged 28), of South Newington, daughter of George Best, wheelwright; were married at the parish church of South Newington in Oxfordshire on 21 August 1901. The witnesses were called Thomas Nash and Edith Best. [5]
1911 census: Henry Oliver was living at 3 Victoria Road at Godalming in Surrey with his wife Emily Kate Oliver, their 2 children, and his aunt Cicely Nash. [More precisely his wife's aunt.] His age was given as 30, implying a birth date in 1880 or 1881. His birthplace was given as Swerford, Oxfordshire. He was employed as a warehouseman and engine driver. It was stated that Henry and Emily had been married for 9 complete years and had had 2 children together. [6]
His first wife Emily died in 1913.
Second marriage: Henry Oliver, of Godalming, and Norah Bartlett, of South Newington in Oxfordshire, were married on 21 December 1914 at the Congregational Church in Godalming. [7] [8]
Death: Henry died on 30th July 1918 in Berlin. His service number was 290315 and he was a Private in the 7th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment.[9] The records show that he died of sickness, was aged 37 and the son of Henry Oliver of Swerford, Enstone, Oxon.[10]
He was buried in Berlin South-Western Cemetery, Stahnsdorf, Brandenburg, Germany and the gravestone records note that his next of kin was Mrs Norah Oliver of 7 Town End Street, Godalming, Surrey and that the insciption she requested on the headstone was "Till the Pearly Gates unfold".[11]
