Notes

In 1853 the Dutch Reformed Church in Graaf-Reinett was petitioned by the farmers at Hopetown to be allowed to form a congregation. After permission was granted on 18 February 1854, they found a village on the farm Duvenaarsfontein, bought from Siewert Christiaan Wiid for £1,125. The little village was named Hopetown after the acting secretary of the Cape Colonial government, Major William Hope, at least that is the official explanation. Hopetown became a municipality in September 1858.21:11, 10 April 2022 (UTC)
