He was a 23 year old farming at Twee Riviere near Joubertina when he married the 23 year old Anna Catharina Strydom in Uitenhage in 1824; nine children were born of this marriage.

Second Marriage

Twenty years later, after Anna had passed away two years previously, he married Susanna Magdalena Ferreira in the Gamtoos Rivier Church in Uitenhage; a further seven children were born of this marriage.[4]

Die eerste landdros, Adriaan Gysbert van Kervel (*1760) het baie vir die mense gedoen en hom veral beywer vir dorp- en kerkstigting Oudtshoorn is in 1847 afgestig van beide die gemeentes George en Mosselbaai en vernoem na Gesina Ernestina Johanna Van Rheede van Oudtshoorn (1799-1868) ega van Egbertus Bergh (1794-1857) destydse Siviele Kommissaris van Geroge.
