Biography

"Hughes[1] Charles Honoré Dugué OLIVIER de Vézin de St-Maurice was born 8 June 1751 at Trois-Rivières, Québec to Louis Pierre François Marie OLIVIER de Vézin of France and Marie Joséphine GATINEAU du Plessis.

He was baptized 26 July 1751 in New Orleans. Baptismal sponsors were Honoré Michel DE LA ROUVILLIER – Royal Councilor and General Paymaster of the Navy in the Louisiana colony and Charlotte FLEURY, Marquise de Vaudreuil – épouse à Pierre RIGAUD, Marquis de Vaudreuil – Governor of the Louisiana Province (SLC B22 226).

He married c. 1770 Marie-Magdeleine DE MARIGNY DE MANDÉVILLE, daughter of Antoine Philippe DE MARIGNY DE MANDÉVILLE of France and Marie Françoise DUPART GASCHET de l’Isle (NO Ch).

By 1788, she ([[[Marigny_de_Mandeville-1|Marie-Magdeleine]]) had died, and Charles OLIVIER de Vézin had taken up with one mulâtresse mistress and soon would have an additional one: Adélaïde DUBREUIL – mulâtresse affranchie, daughter of Alexandre DUBREUIL and Marianne – négresse esclave. Magdeleine LACOSTE – mulâtresse libre, daughter of Jean LACOSTE and unknown négresse mother.[2]

He, along with both of his mulâtresse mistresses, arrived and settled in the Attakapas District between present-day Jeanerette and New Iberia along Bayou Têche. They formed the nucleus of the Free People of Color community of New Iberia/Grand-Marais with nearly 20 children total.

Charles died on 24 April 1815 at his home and was buried at his home on the east side of Bayou Teche below New Iberia, Iberia Parish, Louisiana.[3]

OLIVIER, CHARLES HONORE served with the New Orleans Militia during the American Revolution. [4]
