Biography

DEACON JOSEPH OLMSTED (II) was born around 1674 in Hartford, Connecticut. He was the son of Joseph Olmsted and Elizabeth Butler. He married Hannah Marsh (1681-8/22/1760), daughter of John Marsh and Sarah Lyman, in _____ in Hartford. They had 11 children: Joseph (5/25/1705-9/30/1775); Jonathan; William; Hannah; Mabel; Asahel; Sarah; Anna; Naomi; Elihu; and Ashbel. He served as executor of his father’s estate when he died in 1725. In the Will he received the house and land his father had previously gifted, plus 10 acres of upland. With his siblings they agreed on how to split the land on 12/6/1726. By 1746 he was Deacon of the Hartford Church, when Samuel Woodridge’s Will refers to his title. Hannah died 8/22/1760 and Joseph on 2/25/1762 in East Hartford, Connecticut.

Notes

  • This is an early family in Hartford and the surname is spelled both ways (with and without the "a") in early records. This family tended to use Olmsted.

Wondering if there is a source for the marriage. That date seems rather far from their first child, Joseph (III), who was born in 1705. Just seems unlikely that there would be a large gap from marriage to first child.
