Biography

Morten Olsen was from Skotselven in Eiker, born about 1659 and died in 1740 at the age of 84 years and five months. In 1692, he married Kjersti Larsdatter from Devegge. She was born about 1662 and died in 1733.

Morten and Kjersti had the following children:

Lars Mortensen, born 1692 and died 1727 and married in 1717 Kari Gautesdatter from North Espeset. Lars and Kari took over the North Espeset farm.

Marte/Margit Mortensdatter was born 1695 and died 1766 and in 1720 married Ola Amundsen from Sanden; they lived there.

Halvor Mortensen was born 1699 and died 1733. In 1727 he married Åse Hermundsdatter from Hermundsgard (under Rolvshus), where they lived.

Ambjørg Mortensdatter was born 1702 and died in 1773. In 1725 she married Rasmus Jensen from Storeli (under Søre Nordre-Li); and the lived there. Then, in 1752, she married the widower Halvor Embriksen.''

Morten was a blacksmith by profession and he continued in this profession after he arrived at Nes i Hallingdal. His name is often written only "Morten Smed." In the Old Church, there is a spire rod wrought of iron with Morten's initials carved into the metal "M.O.S." dating from 1727.

In 1690, Morten Olsen Smed was a witness in a legal case. Morten was spending the night with Ola Hanssen; however, Morten testified that he was asleep when the event in question happened, so did not know anything.

In 1692, Morten was mentioned in the records as among the smallholders and craftsman of the village.

In 1698, he became a witness again, and stated that his hands were good for holding his iron works as well as a jug of beer. In the poll tax that year we hear that Morten Larsen who sometimes provided efficient tools for farmers was a poor man and that he was working for idealistic principles rather than for money.
