His brother Lars was born on September 4, 1821, in Vik, Sogn og Fjordane, Norway, when Elling was 2 years old. His father Ole passed away on June 14, 1823, in Vik, Sogn og Fjordane, Norway, at the age of 42. Elling was confirmed in 1834 at Vik, Sogn og Fjordane, Norway.

"The following recollections were written by Anders A. Houglum during the winter of 1932-33. . . . Grandpa Houglum wrote his recollections. . . . My father's name was Anfind Olson Houglum, and my mother's name, anna Jensdatter Houglum. . . . There were six children in our family. Guro, Ole, Jens, two boys who died in infancy, and myself. . . . At Bergen we embarked on the sailship Maryland. . . . We were soon moving up the St Lawrence to Quebec. . . . From Detroit we went to Chicago, and then on to LaCrosse, Wisconsin, and from there by boat up the Mississippi River to Red Wing, Minnesota, where my uncle Elling met us and took us to Wanamingo Township, Goodhue County, Minnesota. My two brothers, Ole and Jens, were both there, so now we had a family reunion. We lived in Goodhue County two years. In the spring of 1870, I was confirmed in the Aspelund church by Rev Osten Hanson. . . . In the spring of 1871 we left Goodhue County for the Northwest. Our goal was the famous Red River Valley. . . . We went . . . to Fergus Falls, where we visited a few relatives. . . . . On Feb 14, 1883, I was married to Martha Larson from Nicollet Co MN. . . . I helped organize a Lutheran Congregation, known as the Houglum Congregation. . . . Father, mother, and my two brothers, Ole and Jens, are buried in the cemetery by the Houglum Church. We lived in Lake Park Township for 36 years. . . . In 1931, wife and I moved to Perley where I still reside. The youngest in our family, Clarence Hjalmar, died November 9th, 1918.
