Anna was a seamstress before she married Emmett. Emmett's father, who had a homestead near the Olson farm, was, according to family tradition, part Native American. According to the U.S. Census information, Emmett's father was born in the state of New York, while his mother, Emeline, was born in Germany. Anna's daughter, Esther, remembered that her mother was a tall, stately woman.
Anna and Emmett farmed in North Dakota five or six years before they moved to Erie, Illinois, when Esther was about three years old and LeRoy was only an infant. In Erie, they farmed, raised their children, and lived out their lives.
At the age of seventy, Anna was the victim of a terrible accident. At 11:00 a.m. on the 11th of May, 1960, the car she was driving was hit by a freight train as Anna attempted to cross the tracks. She died instantly.
