Biography

623 Birth and Parents

Marwān ibn al-Ḥakam ibn Abiʾl-ʿAs ibn Umayya was born in the period 623-626 and lived till April or May of the year 685. He was the son of Al-Hakam ibn Abi al-'As.[1]

Companion

Marwan had known the Islamic prophet Muhammad and is thus considered a sahaba (companion). [1]

684 Reign

Commonly known as Marwan I and founder of the Marwanid ruling house, he was the fourth caliph of the Umayyad Caliphate. While he himself ruled less than a year in 684–685, the Marwanid ruling house, which remained in power until 750. [1]

He had perhaps 8 children, one of whom married Musa ibn Nuseir Musa. [1]

Marwan ibn al-Ḥakam ibn Abi al-ʿAs ibn Umayya (abt 623-685) was the fourth caliph of the Umayyad dynasty (reigned 684–685) [2] and the first of the Marwanid caliphs [3] He was popularly known as Marwan I. He had known the Islamic prophet Muhammad and is thus considered a companion, and served as the secretary and right-hand man of his kinsman, the Caliph, Uthman Affan al-Umayyah. [2]

He had numerous wives, a concubine and at least 16 children. His first wife, the mother of his successor, Abd al-Malik, was A'isha bint Muʿawiya ibn al-Mughira, a daughter of his paternal first cousin Mu'awiya ibn al-Mughira. Marwan was considered to be "a military leader and statesman of great skill and decisiveness amply endowed with the qualities of ḥilm [levelheadedness] and shrewdness, which characterized other outstanding members of the Umayyad clan". [2]
