Biography

William was born in early 1841, the eldest child of William Orchard, a farmer, and Mary Hawke.[1] He was baptised on 18 February 1841, at Jacobstow, Cornwall. The family's residence was listed as Highway in Poundstock.[2]

During the 1841 census, William and his parents were still living in Highway, Poundstock. William was listed as being four months old. Living next door in Higher Trewint are William's maternal grandparents, John Hawke and Elizabeth.[3]

By the time of the 1851 census, the family had grown and moved to Sudcott, Jacobstow. Living with William are his parents, two younger siblings, and his maternal grandparents. Also living in Sudcott are William's paternal grandmother, Jenny (Uglow) Orchard, an aunt, an uncle and a couple of cousins.[4]

William will spend his entire career as a carpenter and joiner. This is first seen within the 1861 census with twenty year old William working under master carpenter, Richard Orchard Hutchings. Richard was William's first cousin, his mother being William's aunt, Jenny Orchard.[5]

On 26 December 1867 at St Mary's Church, Lewisham, William married Jane Tucker. Witnesses were John Jones and Emma Constable, who witnessed quite a few other marriages on the same day.[6][7]

In 1871, William was living with his wife and their first born child. William's younger brother, Richard John, was boarding with the family. They were living at 12 Francis Street, Deptford, London. Both William and his brother were working as mechanics.[8]

In early 1881, William and Jane's third daughter, Emily Kate, passed away at the age of four. She was buried at Manor Park Cemetery, the first of five family members to be buried in the same plot.

At some time before the 1881 census, the family moved to 22 Oakfield Road, Clapton, Hackney, London. The family would remain here for at least the next thirty years. William was working as a Joiner, living with his wife and six children.[9]

Unfortunately, on 28 January 1886, the second of William and Jane's children passed away, Sidney Wallace. He was three years and seven months old.

On 20 January 1891, William became a Freemason, being initiated into the United Grand Lodge of England, William Shurmur Lodge, Chingford. His occupation was listed as a builder.[10]

Once again, the entire family were living together in 1891. William was listed as a carpenter & joiner. His eldest son, now twenty two, was also working as a carpenter & joiner. His son Frederick John and daughter Eliza Eleanor are working as carpenter and dressmaker apprentices respectively.[11]

By the time of the 1901 census, William and Jane's son, Frederick John, had married and moved away. His wife and other five living children were still residing at 22 Oakfield Road. William was still working as a carpenter.[12]

William passed away in 1904, aged sixty three.[13] He was buried on 5 April 1904 in Manor Park Cemetery, Forest Gate, Newham, London. Three of his children and his wife are buried in the same plot.[14]
