Biography

John Osborn of Braintree and Weymouth

John Osborn migrated to New England, arriving at Weymouth, Massachusetts Bay Colony by 1639. His parents and origins are unknown.[1]He probably lived in Weymouth at least from 1639 to 1663. In the first division of land he had four acres then in the second division of December 14, 1663 he was granted an additional twelve acres.[2]

The name of John Osborn's wife was probably Mary _____ as Robert Charles Anderson in "The Great Migration Directory..." lists Mary Osborn directly after John Osborn and he states, ("Probably wife of John Osborn.")[1]

Children of John and Mary Osborn

  1. John Osborn who was born at Weymouth on February 2, 1639.[2][3]
  2. Mary Osborn who was married in Boston on May 7, 1659 to John Ross. She is called "daughter of John Osborn of Weymouth" in the record.[2]
  3. Matthew Osborne died 3o 1641 in Braintree.[4]May, 1641.[2]
  4. Ephraim Osborn who was born at Weymouth on August 11, 1657.[2]Married Jane Matson on October 21, 1697 at Cambridge. He died August 26, 1734 at the age of 78 years. Children: Sarah, Abigail, Mary, Jane, Ephraim, Thomas.[5]
  5. Patience Osborne, married Joseph Aldrich February 26, 1662. They moved to Rhode Island where she died in 1705.[6]

Raymon Meyers Tingley adds the following children in "Some Ancestryal Lines:"[7]

  1. Martha born April 6, 1638 at Weymouth and died May, 1641 at Weymouth.
  2. William born April 15, 1645 at Weymouth. m. Hannah daut. of Capt John Burton of Salem, Massachusetts.
  3. Walter born June 18, 1648 at Weymouth, d. Nov. 11, 1660 at Weymouth.
  4. Samuel born May 1, 1651 at Weymouth, died Nov. 12, 1660 at Weymouth.
  5. Elizabeth born Aug. 7, 1654 at Weymouth.

Evidently John and Mary Osborn did have an additional child, a girl, since on September 19, 1637 at the Quarter Court held at Boston, "Mary Osborne, the wife of _____ Osborne, being indited about the death of her daughter, found the byll ignoramus." A marginal note says, "Mary Osborn acqd."[8]

Mary, wife of John Osborn was brought before the Quarter Court again on July 29, 1641 where she was accused "for her grosse miscarriage in giveing her husband quick silver and other abuses." She was "censured to bee severely whiped."[8]

Death

Died: After 1663.[citation needed]
Date last known living.'
Note: Tingley Error: He did not die 27 October 1686 - that is the death date of a different John Osborn.

Research Notes

  • Torrey's New England Marriages gives surname of Mary [?KNIGHT] by 1639(40?), ?31 Mar 1637?; Weymouth; and cites Snow-Estes 2:101; Tingley-Meyers 12, 189, 261; Charlestown 716; Reynolds 31:128.[9]
  • Raymon Meyers Tingley in "Some Ancestral Lines" says John Osborne married in England to Mary the daughter of Walter Knight of Salem.[7] However, Anderson in his review of Walter Knight of Salem could not identify the children nor the wives of Walter Knight of Salem.[10]
  • George Walter Chamberlain in "History of Weymouth" conjectures that Matthew Osborne (who was apprentice to John Reade of Weymouth on May 3, 1637 then had his indenture transferred to John Doane of New Plymouth on September 14, 1637), was John Osborn's brother.[2]
  • For an article about Quicksilver go here:[1]
  • I looked in the published Weymouth Vital Records and could not find any of the birth dates for the additional children included in Tingley-Meyers Cole-12288 15:48, 1 February 2021 (UTC)
  • HE lived in Braintree and Weyworth Massachusetts between the late 1630's through the 1650's. [11]

Osborne-8897 and Osborn-182 appear to represent the same person because: Profiles prepped for merge, list of children now correct
posted by Brad Stauf
Linden, Regarding the merge of this profile into Osborn-182, they are ready to be merged. Please move forward on this. Thank you.

Cheryl, PGM Co-Leader (and John Osborn is my 9th ggrandfather).

Osborn-182 and Osborne-8897 are not ready to be merged because: I want to say this is the same person based on the information in the biography:

about the children of John and Mary being: John, Matthew, Mary and Ephriam, because these are the notes I have, however these notes in the biography do match the children actually connected to this profile. Which is correct? I do not want to approve the merge until this information is figured out.

This bio is where the sources are, so that's what I would pay attention to.

I think that children Robert, William and Hannah should probably be detached.

I’ve disconnected Robert, And porpoise a merge that matched the source on that profile. I’ve also posted a message on Hannah’s profile...well give the PMs a few days to respond.

William and Hannah removed as children.

working on this profile over the next few days.....

others, please refrain from editing for a while. I'll post when I'm finished. Thanks.

I'm finished working on this profile of my 9th ggrandfather... tried to tease apart the actual information from the work of Raymon Meyers Tingley.

About his year of birth in the data section ... that seems to early to me being his first child was born 1638 or 1639; and according to Great Migration Directory he migrated in 1639. I would guess his dob as closer to 1613... 25 years prior to marriage and migration. Any other estimates?

I didn't find a source for his death. note ... citation needed ...

edit:

  1. I question whether the person Robert, linked as son who died in Denmark, is actually a son.. what do you think?
  2. I doubt that attached "daughter" Hannah should be attached here. She was born in Hampden and died in Windsor. Our John Osborn lived only in Weymouth.

Question: Are there any PMs on this profile who disagree with my reworking of this biography? A new biography would NOT be based on Tingley, since much of his work has proved to be fraudulent.

I am beginning with Research notes, but will reconsider if requested.

I question whether Susan Juggins who married John Osborne-2362 in Cranfield Bedfordshire, was the mother of John Osborne-2361 born in Crewkerne, Somerset, 170 miles away. I doubt that Susan set foot outside Cranfield in her life!

Does anybody mind if I search for further information on Mary (Knight) Osborn? Then rewrite a biography?

I personally believe she is part of a Tingley hoax, but I will do as much digging as I am able and try to prove her as wife of John Osborn.

Please comment if you have questions or disagreements. Thanks.

In answer to Lance (comment below). The personal genealogical site you have given as a source link is for John Osborne-2361. They lived in New England at the same time. This profile, John Osborn-182 lived in Braintree and Weymouth, Massachusetts Bay. The other John Osborne-2361 lived in Windsor, Connecticut. I further explained the two men in the note at the top of the biography.
That Juggins was married to the John Osborne-2361 from Crewkerne who migrated to Windsor is documented on his profile.

Therefore I removed her as the wife of this John Osborn-182

I'm wondering how we can trust the work of Tingley, especially for a profile that is in the PGM project?? (see bio) And Tingley's work is called "solid."

I think the wife (who is supposedly my 9th ggmother) Mary Knight-269 needs to be reviewed as well.

John is shown as having two wives. The first marriage to Susan Juggins was a different John, b 1595ish in Cranfield, Bedfordshire. Susan didn't die until 1660 in Cranfield. She needs to be detached from Osborn-182, and then the children sorted out.

Hello, Lance,

Where is the evidence for that lineage?
