- Family moved to Spokane, WA abt. 1927, and San Francisco in 1929 where she learned tennis on Golden Gate public tennis courts
- Champion tennis player, ranked #1 in the world 1947-50
- Inducted to the International Tennis Hall of Fame, 1996
- After her 1964 divorce, she formed a partnership with Margaret Varner Bloss, another tennis player, who also excelled at badminton and squash; they formed duPont-Bloss Stabes, ranked Top 20 Racehorse Owners in 1996
