Note: As generously phrased by James Quinn, this family was the subject of a "genealogical hoax" by a "professional" genealogist.[1] The incorrect information has now made its way into online data bases everywhere. Part of the fraudulent claim was that the parents of Caleb Osborne were Jonathan Osbourne and Gretta Hollman of Williamsburg.[1] None of the claimed documentation has ever been discovered for this.[1] For this reason, the unproven parents have been removed.

Biography

Uncertain Origin

Caleb was born c. 1725, probably at Rowan County, North Carolina, (or possibly at New York or New Jersey).[1][2] This birth date is a guess, based on known historical dates.

Caleb may have been a brother of Ephraim Osborne, Sr.[2]

Marriage and Children

Caleb is said to have married to Hannah Howard.[citation needed] His proposed brother, Ephraim Osborne, is said to have married to Elizabeth Howard.[2] On Feb 5, 1778, Cornelius Howard was found living on the South Fork of the Yadkin River, near to Caleb.[2]

Caleb and Hannah had at least seven children.[2]

Fought in Indian Wars[citation needed]

Death & Probate

Caleb Osborn presumably died intestate, certainly before 7 August 1781, presumably in Rowan County, North Carolina.

On 7 August 1781, Letters of Administration on the Estate of Caleb Osborn were issued to Hannah Osborn Widow and relict of the deceased who gave Samuel Bailey and David Craige Securities in the sum of £250, Administrator qualified.[3]

On 11 September 1782, James Osborne sold land "formerly belonging to Caleb Osborn, Decd."[citation needed]

On 7 [8?] November 1784, an account of the settlement of the Estate of Cable Osborn was presented to the Court.[4]

Several of Caleb's sons removed to the Clinch Valley area of Russell and Scott Counties, Virginia, and at least one son continued on to Indiana.[2]

DNA Information

We now find there is a genetic connection between Ephraim, brother of Caleb, and the immigrants from Ashford, Kent, England, Thomas Osborne and Mary Goatley.[12] We do not, however, know the intervening generations. Based only on the process of elimination, it is possible that the line from Thomas will prove to be though his son, John, and then James, through an unknown generation, to Caleb.[12]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Caleb by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Caleb:

Osborne-12297 and Osborne-928 appear to represent the same person because: This is a duplicate, though, Caleb wasn't born in Virginia. He died in Rowan County and had a daughter, Abigail Osborn who married Zachariah Wells.

THIS COMMENT IT TO POTENTIALLY FILL IN SOME OF THE BLANKS IN THE BIOGRAPHY OF CALEB OSBORNE. THEY ARE BASED GENERALLY ON PRIMARY DATA. CALEB II OSBORNE 1781 WAS BORN IN ELIZABETH TOWN New Jersey. HIS FATHER WAS CALEB I, AND HE HAD A PRESUMED SON CALEB III. HE IS LISTED AS A CLINKER LOT RIGHT MAN. SEE ORIGINS OF New Jersey SETTLEMENT IN North Carolina. EPHRAIM IS NOT A CLINKER LOT RIGHT MAN SO HE WOULD BE A COUSIN AND NOT A BROTHER. BOTH WERE IN Rowan County NC ABOUT 1750 ISH. WITH EPRAIM MOVING ACROSS THE STATE LINE TO Grayson County VA. IN ABOUT 1766. BECAUSE OF THE SETTLEMENT OF CALB II'S ESTATE, WE KNOW THAT HIS WIFE WAS NAMED HANNAH. HER LAST NAME IS BASED UPON SPECULATION.

CALEB HAS FIVE SONS, STEPHEN, JAMES, THOMAS, WILLIAM AND MORGAN??. THIS CAN BE AUTHENTICATED BY THE SETTLEMENT OF THOMAS OSBORNE'S ESTATE WHO WAS KILLED BY THE INDIANS IN ABOUT 1788 IN CASTLEWOOD VA. STEPHEN AND JAMES WERE ADMINISTRATORS OF THE ESTATE. STEPHEN, JAMES AND THOMAS WERE REVOLUTIONARY WAR SOLDIERS AT MOORE'S FORT IN CASTLEWOOD. STEPHEN SETTLED AT HUNTER'S FORD, LATER TO BE KNOWN AS. OSBORNE'S FORD. STEPHEN'S WILL WAS CONTESTED IN ABOUT 1821 WHICH PROVIDES A LIST OF ALL OF HIS CHILDREN--ABOUT 10--AS WELL AS THEIR WIVES/HUSBANDS. ABIGAIL ELIZABETH MARRIED ZACHARIAH WELLS (CAREFUL FOR THERE ARE THREE) WHO SETTLED BELOW BIG STONE GAP, VA IN ABOUT 1799 SEE LEE COUNTY TAX LIST.

I can find no evidence to support Jonathan Osborne and Gretta Hollman as the parents of Caleb Osborne. The only support online seems to be online family trees, which reference other unsourced family trees. It was suggested in 2015 that these parents be removed. I don't know whether that happened and they were re-attached, but they should probably be removed now, as there is no support for them. Also, there is no support for his place of birth, so it should also be removed.

An objections? Vic

Osborne-2331 and Osborne-928 appear to represent the same person because: Most of the info matches. New DNA testing has made the parents questionable. Needs further research.

Suggest the current parents, Jonathan Osbourne and Gretta Holman, be disconnected (please see bio). Thanks!
