JOSEPH OSGOOD,[1] b. at Lancaster, 25 Jan 1720/1 son of Hooker and Mary (Wheelock) Osgood; d. at Lancaster, 24 Sep 1797; m. 1st at Lancaster, Feb 1740/1, ELIZABETH CARTER, baptized at Lancaster, 30 Oct 1720 daughter of Samuel and Dorothy (Wilder) Carter; Elizabeth d. at Lancaster, 9 Oct 1755. Joseph resided in Lancaster where he was active in town affairs including a term as town moderator.[2] Joseph was a farmer. On 27 June 1782 (recorded 1797), Joseph Osgood conveyed to his son Ephraim for love and goodwill one-half of his farm in Lancaster containing about sixty-eight acres. The deed also references other parcels of meadow that were conveyed to Ephraim by deed in 1778. In a second transaction, the other half of the farm was transferred to Ephraim, this being the half that Joseph received from his honored father Hooker Osgood.[3]

In his will written 26 May 1792 (probate 21 November 1797), Joseph bequeathed to wife Catharine all the household goods, two cows, all the notes due to him, and the money on hand and this is to be her full dower interest in the estate. Children Elizabeth, Joseph, Jonathan, Ezra, Dorothy, Eunice, and Catharine each receives five shillings which constitutes their full share with what they have already received. The residue of the estate goes to sone Ephraim who is also named executor.[4]

In her will written 30 November 1801 (proved 10 May 1819), widow Katharine Osgood made bequests of one dollar each to son Ephraim Osgood and to daughter Eunice wife of Thomas Wright of Sterling. The residue of the estate was bequeathed to daughter Katharine Osgood who was also named executrix.[5]
