Biography

Christopher was born about 1545, probably in Newton Tony, Wiltshire, England, to John Osgood and his wife, Joan (birth surname unknown). He married his first wife, Alice (birth surname unknown), about 1569, probably in Newton Tony. Christening records for their children have not been found, but those children probably include Thomas Osgood, father of the immigrant, Christopher Osgood, possibly named after his grandfather.

Alice died in Newton Tony and was buried there 16 December 1596.[1]

Less than three years later, on 30 October 1599, Christopher married his second wife, the twice-widowed Elizabeth (Nycholas) Brockwell at Saint Thomas's Church, Salisbury, Wiltshire, England.[2] No known children were born from this marriage.

Christopher died in Salisbury and was buried at Saint Thomas's Church 2 September 1606.[3]

Research Notes

NOTE: Christopher Osgood-45 is not the father of John Osgood-3. See new evidence on profile for John. Dellinger-332 18:16, 31 August 2015 (EDT)
Disputed Parents: please see The American Genealogist Vol.83, pages 51-58 (2008-2009), page 51 - 58, New Light on the English Background of the Osgoods of Essex county, Massachusetts, by Jane Fletcher Fiske, FASG. pages 51 through 58 for the discovery of evidence regarding the ancestors of Christopher Osgood II, immigrant to Ipswich Massachusetts in 1634. All eight pages were reproduced on this WikiTree Free Page Christopher Osgood's Ancestors by Joan Fletcher Fiske, FASG - now (Sep 2022) removed due to possible copyright infringement.

There appears to be considerable uncertainty as to the parentage of Christopher Osgood of this era and whether there were one or two individuals of that name living at the same time. The parents of this Christopher have been marked as being uncertain pending evidence that supports them.

It is also possible that another Christofer Osgood is in fact the correct husband of Elizabeth (Nycholas) Brockwell, but this profile has been left connected to hers pending further research.

Should you have evidence that supports one over the other, please add it in a form that is verifiable by others and change the relationships accordingly.

Note: The use of Saint Thomas's Church as the location of two of Elizabeth's marriages (to John Brockwell and to Christopher Osgood) and of the burials of both Christopher and Elizabeth suggests that these are the correct spouses, as does the date of the marriage, less than three years after the death of Christopher's first wife. In addition, the other Christopher, for whom there appear to be no sources, is apparently from Wherwell, Hampshire.

Osgood-766 and Osgood-45 do not represent the same person because: Different birth years (30 years apart) and different fathers. Not enough evidence to merge.

Osgood-766 and Osgood-45 appear to represent the same person because: Same name, spouse, and year of death.
