Biography

Lewis Outlaw was born about 1788 in Duplin County, North Carolina.[1] Some researchers believe his birth date was 9 February 1788, but a specific source has not been found to validate the suggested date. He was the son of James Outlaw and Elizabeth (Graddy) Outlaw.

On 19 April 1812 in Duplin County, North Carolina, he married Elizabeth Whitfield.[2][3]

While living In North Carolina, he was engaged in merchandising and farming.[4] In the 1830 and 1840 U.S. Censuses, Lewis Whitfield was enumerated in Duplin County, North Carolina as head of household.[5][6]

In 1847, Lewis and his family moved to Hopkins County. He first settled two miles north of Nortonville, but after remaining two years, moved to a point one mile south of the village.[4]

In the 1850 U.S. Census, Louis Outlaw was recorded as 62-years old living and farming in Hopkins County, Kentucky with wife Elizabeth and children, John, Henry and Needham Outlaw.[1]

He died 19 July 1859 in Hopkins County, Kentucky, near Nortonville. Note the record shows he was 75-years old, born c. 1784 and his mother was incorrectly listed as Mary Outlaw.[7]

Lewis died intestate and his son John J. Outlaw was appointed administrator and son Needham H. Outlaw as surety of his estate.[8]

NAME: All records found to date show his name only as Lewis Outlaw. Some researchers believe his name was Lewis Henry Outlaw or Douglas Lewis Outlaw. But those suggestions aren't supported by any records.
BIRTH: Some researchers believe his birth date was 9 February 1788, but a specific source has not been found to validate the suggested date.
