Samuel Willson I (1681-1761) was born in Scarborough, England, son of Robert and Ann Willson. He is buried in Friends Cemetery, Quakertown, Hunterdon Co., NJ. Samuel was brought to America in 1682 as a baby. In 1703, he married Esther (called Hester) Overton, she was born in 1682, daughter of Samuel Overton and Hannah Hall. They were both members of the Society of Friends and first settled in Chesterfield, Burlington Co., NJ. and gave birth to eight children before removing to Hunterdon Co., NJ. According to "History of Burlington County", Woodward and Hagerman, pg 280, Samuel worked as an overseer of the poor in Chesterfield and as Surveyor of Highways in 1724.
In 1730, Samuel and the family moved to Hunterdon Co., NJ. They created a homestead of 600 acres in Bethlehem Township. At this point, the eldest child was 24 and the youngest was five, none had yet married. In 1735, a house had been built on the farm and apparently visited by William C. Armstrong who wrote "The Lundy Family and Their Descendents". Many generations lived there and it was rebuilt in 1907 by William Wolverton who had married Annie E. Willson.
Samuel Willson I was a minister at the Society of Friends, Kingwood Meeting, NJ. In 1733, he was appointed to the first board of trustees for Kingwood Meeting. According to a Kingwood Meeting Memorial, Samuel's "life and conversation (in a good degree) was solid, sober, and orderly agreeable to his ministry. He was suddenly seized with death, not lying sick, he had no time to declare his mind. Yet we have good hope that he has gone to receive and enjoy the Immortal Crown that is laid up for the righteous." It is presumed that Ester is also buried at Kingwood.
Dates of the children and other data were obtained by research of Mary C. (Willson) Vail and pg 460 of "The Lundy Family and Their Descendents." And interesting note is four children of Samuel and Esther married four children of Richard Lundy II and Elizabeth Large. (Willson 7)
