Biography

Owada Masako was born in Tokyo-to, Japan, on 9 December 1963.

Masako attended kindergarten at Detskiysad No. 1127 Daycare in Moscow, USSR, before attending New York City public kindergarten No. 81 in New York City around 1969. After returning to Japan in 1971, she attended Futaba Gakuen after attending two other schools through a few weeks. In 1979, she moved again to the United States, where she graduated from Belmont High School as a president of the National Honor Society in 1981. That same year, Masako entered Harvard University/Radcliffe College's economics department, graduating magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics in 1985. She then moved back to Japan where she studied law at the University of Tokyo for six months and passed the entrance examination for the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

It was during her studies at the University of Tokyo that Masako met a prince of Japan. Despite her attendance of Balliol College in Oxford University before returning to Japan in 1990, the prince, who would latter become the Crown Prince, remained interested in her. Masako declined two proposals by the Crown Prince until finally accepting it on 9 December 1992. They were engaged on 12 April 1993, and were married on 9 June. The Crown Princess's first pregnancy ended in a miscarriage, but she gave birth to a daughter in Tokyo-to on 1 December 2001.

In July 2004, the Crown Princess was diagnosed with adjustment disorder and sought treatment. In December 2012, she issued a statement saying that she is still seeking treatment for her illness.

On 1 May 2019, the Crown Prince succeeded his father the Emperor to the throne upon abdication, thus the Crown Princess became his empress consort.
