Census records indicate that John Owens was born around 1822 at Plymouth, Devon. His father was John Owens (see sources below) and it presumed that his mother was Sophia Bowditch, she having married John Owens in 1821.

John 'Owen' of full age, bachelor, Stone Turner of Cathay, married Sarah Ann Merchant of full age, spinster of Cathay, by Banns, on 07 Feb 1843 at St Mary Redcliffe, Bristol. Father's name was John Owen, Stone Turner.^[1]

John Owens age 32, widower, stone cutter of 6 Lewins Mead, married Ann Low age 24, spinster, Servant of Bridewell Street, by Banns on 02 Dec 1856 at St James, Bristol. Father's name was John Owens, Stone Cutter.^[2]
