Biography

John I. Owens II, born about 1685 and died about 1754 in Westmoreland County, VA. He married an unknown woman before 1720 and had 2 children; Nathaniel, Samuel. John I. Owens married Elinor Bryant Gallop (1735 in Richmond County, VA), widow of Capt. Robert Gallop. Elinor was the daughter of ? Bryant and Lucy Doniphan. She was a native of the Patawomeck Tribe. The Patawomeck Tribe (aka Potomac Tribe) formed in the 1600's along the Potomac River in Stafford County. In the 1600's there was a population of about 800 natives. Today, there is an estimated 150 mixed bloods still residing in the region. Chief Japasaw was the leader of the tribe, and brother to Chief Powhatan, father of Pocahontas. Pocahontas' mother was a member of the Patawomeck Tribe. [citation needed]

The following added by Jerry Nathaniel Owens, 29 Mar 2022:

John I. Owens II (1685–1753), born 1685, Owens, King George, King George County, Virginia; died 14 Jun 1753 Owens, King George, King George, Virginia, USA. No burial information was available.

John I. Owens II was married to a woman named (m1) Mary (last name unknown) sometime after 1710 and before 1720. Although a few genealogy sites state they had two children, Nathaniel and Samuel, the birth dates of Nathaniel and Samuel would make Eleanor Bryant Gallop their mother. It has been a bad habit of some amateur genealogists to attribute children to one wife or another without regard for the birth dates of the children. These errors then pollute pedigrees and genealogies with erroneous information. One genealogy even assigned Mary as John’s daughter instead of his wife. Regarding the marriage of John and Mary, there were no children born of their marriage. No other details about Mary were available, i.e., last name, parents, date or place of birth, or date or place of death.

John then married (m2) Eleanor ‘Elinor’ G. Bryant Gallop (1680-1756), the widow of Capt. Robert Gallop (d.1720), and daughter of Richard Silas Bryant (not ‘Silent’ Bryant) and Lucy Donovan, c.1720, in Richmond County, Virginia.

John was a successful farmer and lived his whole life in Owens, King George County, Virginia.

Children

Children of John I. Owens II and Eleanor G. Bryant Gallop:

1. Phyllis Gallop (Step-daughter), (1699-1744), born 1699, in Owens, King George County, Virginia; died 1744, Fauquier County, Virginia. No burial information was found. Married (m1) Thomas Monteith (1694-1746), c.1737, in King George County, Virginia. Phyllis then married her cousin, (m2) Benjamin Elkins, and had another large family with him. No record of the children from either marriage could be found, just information stating she had several children from each husband.

2. Nathaniel Bryant Owens (c.1720-1807), born circa 1720, Owens, King George County, Virginia; died 04 Sep 1807, Fauquier County, Virginia; buried 07 Sep 1807 (location unknown); reinterred 29 Sep 1867, Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington County, Virginia, plot# 10314. Married Elizabeth Ann Marder (1735-1770), known as Ann, daughter of William Marder (1700-1787) and Ann Rowley (1694-1795), in c.1748 in Ireland, then returned to the Colonies c.1750 with his bride to King George County, Virginia.

3. John Owens III (1724-1799), born 1724, Isle of Wight County, Virginia; died 26 Aug 1799, Edgecomb County, North Carolina. No burial information was available. Research Notes

Eleanor ‘Elinor’ G. Bryant was first married to Captain Robert Gallop (1653-1720), c.1696, and they reportedly had four daughters: (1) Ann Gallop (1696-1793); (2) Mary Gallop (1696-1744); (3) Phyllis Gallop (1699-1744); (4) Elinor Gallop (1709-1735). Capt. Gallop died on 20 May 1720, while visiting his kinsfolk in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts. When Eleanor G. Bryant Gallop remarried to John I. Owens II, the only one of her children still living with her was Phyllis Gallop. No mention is made of the other three daughters, except that they lived in King George County, Virginia. They did not live in the Owens household.

Phyllis Gallop was the daughter of Capt. Gallop and Eleanor, and step-daughter to John I. Owens II. John and Eleanor remained in Owens, King George County, Virginia until their deaths, John dying in 1753, and Eleanor dying in 1756.

In another genealogy there is a note that Eleanor G. Bryant Gallop was ¼ or ½ Cherokee Indian or Potomac Indian. That statement is an error, but her daughter Phyllis Gallop did marry a man who was ½ Cherokee and ¼ Potomac Indian. Eleanor G. Bryant Gallop is the natural daughter of Richard Silas Bryant and Lucy Doniphan (English: Donovan). Eleanor’s daughter, Phyllis Gallop, married Thomas Monteith who was ½ Cherokee Indian, and ¼ Potomac Indian. It was also noted that James Monteith (son of Thomas Monteith and Phyllis Gallop) was disowned by his family for marrying another Phyllis (last name unknown), who was ½ Cherokee or Potomac Indian. This begs the question, why would Thomas Monteith and Phyllis Gallop, disown their son James Monteith for marrying a Native American woman, also named Phyllis, if Thomas Monteith (James’ father) himself was said to be a total of ¾ Native American. These inconsistencies account for the error in Eleanor Bryant Gallop’s ancestry as previously noted. Eleanor G. Bryant Gallop was actually Irish and Welsh, and born in King George County, Virginia.

James Monteith was also said to have married Leah, daughter of Samuel Owens (1725-1766). Since Samuel never married this is most probably not true.

Regarding John I. Owens II marriages, there is yet another genealogy that states he was married to a woman named Jane (last name unknown), after Eleanor’s death. Since John died three years before Eleanor, this cannot be true.
