Biography

Mary Ellen Owens was born 17 Jan 1871 to John Edward Owens and Mary Elizabeth “Molly” Hanson. Mary Ellen was John Edward and Molly’s first child. John and Molly were living in Old Texas, Monroe Co, Alabama at the time of Mary Ellen’s birth.

In a 1992 interview of Ms. Bertha Owens Johnson, Ms. Helen Burt recorded the following notes:

“The grandmother of Mary Ellen Owens took her just after birth because she was so small and frail. She weight about two pounds. She thrived under the care of her grandmother and lived to become the mother of eleven children. Grandmother Mary Ann did this when any children in the family were ill.”

The grandmother referred to was Mary Ann “Mittie” McLean Owens (b. 28 Apr 1907 – d. Aug 1829) wife of Phillip Marion Owens Jr.

Mary Ellen Owens married Joshua Jasper Evers on 23 May 1886 at age 15. Fourteen months later she gave birth to her first child, Clarence on 21 July 1887. Jasper and Mary Ellen would have 10 more children with the last born in 1912. These children were:

Mary Ellen Owens was 41 when she gave birth to her last child. Her husband Joshua Jasper Evers passed away 9 September 1939 when Mary Ellen was 68-years old. 9-years later Mary Ellen died on 19 August 1948 at age 77. Mary Ellen Owens passed away in the home of her granddaughter Ms. Norma Evers Sikes. Mary Ellen was survived by on daughter and four sons.
