Biography

In 1769, Lawrence Owen bought a 200-acre parcel of land in Frederick County, Maryland, from his brother, Edward Owen, Jr. It consisted of part of "Resurvey on Friends Advice." [1] Five years later, Lawrence sold half the land back to the "heirs of Edward Owen, Junior, deceased," namely Mary Owen, Robert Carlise Owen, Edward Carlisle Owen and David Owen. The purchase price had been paid by "Edward Owen Junr. (deceased) in his life time." Lawrence's wife, Sarah Owen, agreed to the sale. [2]

In 1779, Lawrence Owen purchased a 147-acre parcel of land in Montgomery County, Maryland, part of a tract called "Resurvey on Timber Neck." [3]

SARAH BEALL

Lawrence married twice. His first wife was Sarah Beall, daughter of Alexander Beall. This can be established by following the ownership of an 84-acre parcel of land called "Rubbish" from father to daughter to husband.

Note: Lawrence had an uncle named Lawrence Owen, whose wife was named Sarah.

Among the lands owned by Alexander Beall was an 84-acre parcel called "Rubbish," located in western Frederick County, Maryland, an area that later became Washington County. [4]

In his 1759 will, Alexander gave an 84-acre parcel of land to his daughter Sarah. Although the parcel was not named in the will, later deeds show that it had to be the parcel called "Rubbish." Language in the will indicates that Sarah was an unmarried minor at the time: Alexander gave 20 pounds to each of his children to be paid "as they respectively arrive at age or marry." The age of majority for women in Colonial Maryland was 16, so Sarah was likely born after about 1743. [5]

Sarah carried the land into her marriage, as shown by a 1770 deed (recorded 5 May 1772) in which "Lawrence Owen, son of Edward, and Sarah his wife" sold the 84-acre parcel named "Rubbish." [6]

SARAH HARDY

Laurence married his second wife, Sarah Hardy, in Montgomery County, Maryland, on 22 June 1780.[7]

An 1800 Montgomery County deed shows that Lawrence's wife, Sarah, was the daughter of Samuel Hardy. A parcel of land called "Grandmother's Good Will," belonging to the heirs of Samuel Hardy, was sold at a sheriff's sale to satisfy a judgement against them. Among the heirs were "Laurence Owen and Sarah his wife," (Other heirs were Elias Hardy, Kinsey Hardy, Samuel Hardy, Jesse Philips and Mary his wife, Henry Wheeler and Rebecca his wife, Frederick Burns and Barbara his wife, Samuel Allison and Fielder his wife and Elizabeth Holland.) [8]
