Biography

Sarah Owen(s) was born Aug.20_1799. She was the daughter of Ismael Owen and Catherine Sterns or Stem. The family lived in Chester County, Pennsylvania at the time of Sarah’s birth.

Freas Brown Saunders copied his parents family Bible records before he left their home for the last time; Kelly O’Leary has loose pages from the original Bible. I have his copies in my possession. These records are written on loose pages of stationary; each page of the original is headed and dated. Terms such as "mother" and "grandmother" are relationships to Freas B. Saunders. Material in "[]" in the typescript is not written in the original ink; I omitted most of this later material in the typescript. FAMILY BIBLE RECORDS

The Saunders Family Bible copied by Freas Saunders identifies the parents of Sarah Owens as Ismael Owen and Catherine Sterns. That Bible record indicates that Catherine was born 24 March 1763 and died in 1846.

“A History of the Juniata Valley And Its People”, written by John W. Jordan, LL.D. in 1913 says of Catherine, “She was a Miss Catherine Stem before her marriage, born March 24, 1763, the daughter of Conrad Stem, of German descent.” I believe that Catherine was the granddaughter of Johanne Conrad Stamm, not his daughter.

An entry from “Pennsylvania Wills, 1682-1834” appears to refer to the family of the Catherine who married Ishmael Owens. The abstract of the Will says, “STERNS, BATTES. Providence, Co. of Phila. August 30, 1781. September 26, 1781. S.16. Wife: Susannah. Children: Conrad, Peter, John, Catharine, Anna, Jacob, Abraham, Betty. Exec: Brother: Conrad Sterns. Brother-in-Law: Jacob Keester. Wit: Christopher Sorver, Mathias Moyer.”

There is some question whether Baltes had one wife named Else/Alse/Susannah or two wives. The documents below suggest that Baltzer had only one wife.

1769 Will of Peter Kuster...names daughter as "Else Stam, wife of Baltzer Stam".
1774 Deed of Baltzer Stam...names wife Susannah.
1775 Deed of Baltzer Stem...names wife Susanna.
1776 Deed of Baltzer Stem...names wife Alce and Else.
1781 Will of Baltes Sterns names wife Susannah.
1807 Administration papers for Alce Stem are indexed under Alice Stem.

If the Catherine Stem born March 24, 1763 who married Ishmael Owens is the daughter of this Baltus Stem, then she is probably the daughter of Else Kuster Stem. Else’s father wrote his Will after Catherine was born. It is abstracted in Pennsylvania Wills, 1682-1834:

“KUSTER, PETER. Phila. Yeoman. September 28, 1763. October 25, 1768. Children: Paul, Else (wife of Balzer Stame), Herman, Jacob and John. Execs.: brother John and son Jacob. Witnesses: Anthony Harp and Arnold Zimmerman. (O:2??)”

The Will of a Conrad Stam was dated 9 12 1744 and proved 2 1 1779; it identifies Balthar Stam as the son of Conrad Stam. The abstract of Conrad’s Will says: “Stam, Conrad. New Providence, Co. of Philadelphia. Yeoman. Dec 9, 1744. Jan 2 1779. R.152. Wife: Maria Catharina. Children: Frederick, Conrad, Balthar, Catharina, Magdalena, Salame. Exec: William Shepherd, Maria Catharina, Stam.” This entry from Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania Wills, 1682-1819 is posted on Ancestry.com.

I found the family of Ishmael Owen in an 1800 U.S. Census index for Chester County, PA. This is shortly after Sarah was born in 1799.

A U.S. Census index for 1810 lists the family of Ishmael Owens in Swatara Township, Dauphin County, PA. The index lists this entry as being on page 047 of the census. My maps show Swatara Twp. to be a little way downstream from Harrisburg, PA. A genealogy lists Ishmael in Middletown in Lr. Swatara Twp., Dauphin County. It appears that Ishmael’s family had moved by 1810. I did not find any family for Ishmael Owens in Chester County or Mifflin County, PA in this index.

I was not able to find Ismael in an index to the 1820 census. There were, however, listings for what may be the households of Ismael's sons in Mifflin Co., PA. David Owens is listed in Lewistown Borough (page 202). Morris Owens is listed in Derry Twp (page 194). William Owens is listed in Lewistown Borough (page 202). Derry Twp is right next to the town of Lewistown, Mifflin Co. PA where a genealogy records Ismael having died.

Sarah’s father died in 1820. Sarah was about 20 years old and unmarried at the time.

The U.S. Census of 1870 lists Sarah Saunders in the family of William Saunders in Scott, Columbia County, Pennsylvania. Sarah Owens Saunders is buried in Bloomsburg, Columbia County, Pennsylvania.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Sarah by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Sarah:
