According to Dick Plover, Ellen was known as Nellie, but she hated the name.

Per Enid Pierce:

"I’am sure Uncle Dick gave you some stories about his mother Ellen Owen Plover. She must have been magnificent. I meet her once. I was 4 and scared to death. I thought she would die before my eyes. She saw that, and told my mother she had “a dolly in the closet” to keep me occupied. My favorite story about her is: they sometimes had loud parties in the apartment, and the police were called. When the officer arrived (Irish of course) Ellen would say "ah now, I know we’re alittle loud, but, won’t ya be coming in for a little drink?" and end up with all the police in the party. A rowdy and brilliant bunch. I am so glad to have been born to these people."
