Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Joanna (Owen) Kerby was a Virginia colonist.

Name: Joanna Owens. [1] [2] Note: Descendants of some of Joanna's siblings retained the original Owen spelling of the surname while others adopted the Owens spelling. Joanna's father used the Owens spelling every time he referred to himself or his children in his will. People of Welsh descent frequently added an 's' to the end of a surname to indicate that it was no longer a patronymic.

Parents: William Owens & Lydia Lunsford[2][3]

Birth: on January 3, 1713 (unproven date) in Henrico County, Virginia[1][2]No original document can be found to confirm Joanna's date of birth and the sources cited above are unreliable--at best--and it appears that one copied from the other (see comments in Sources below). There is some dispute over Joanna's place of birth - some duplicate profiles stated she was born in Pittsylvania, Virginia but Pittsylvania County did not exist when she was born and--in any event-- it was on the opposite side of the James River from where her parents lived in Henrico County. Other unsourced family trees mistakenly claim she was born in Prince George County but there is good documentary evidence that her parents lived in Henrico County and no evidence that they ever lived in Prince George County.

Marriage: to John Kerby, 1729 (unproven date) in Goochland County, VA[2]
Documented children include

  1. Francis Kirby was born about 1738 in Goochland County, Virginia and died after 1798 in Greenville County, South Carolina.
  2. John Kirby, Jr. was born on 18 Apr 1741 in Halifax County, Virginia and died about 1805 in Union County, South Carolina
  3. David Kirby was born on 14 Jul 1738 in Franklin County, Virginia and died on 6 Apr 1811 in Warren County, Kentucky
  4. Henry Kirby was born about 1745 in Halifax County, Virginia and died about 1830 in Tennessee
  5. Josiah Kirby was born about 1747 in Franklin County, Virginia.
  6. Mary Kirby was born about 1749 in Franklin County, Virginia. Mary married Joseph Hubbard.
  7. Jesse Kirby was born about 1750 in Franklin County, Virginia and died in Aug 1786 about age
  8. Susannah Kirby was born about 1753 in Prince George County, Virginia. Susannah married Thompson.

Some sources state that Joanna and John had ten children at least.

Residence
23 Oct 1752 - Halifax County, Virginia[4]She was mentioned in her father's will.
20 Mar 1753 - Halifax County, Virginia[5]Her husband presented her late father's will in court. Her brother, John Owens, entered a caveat against proof of the will (because his given name was inadvertently left blank on the court copy?)

Death: 1795 (unproven date) in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, USA. [1]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Joanna by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Joanna:

Owen-3242 and Owen-1155 appear to represent the same person because: birth year (1700) and location (Halifax County) for Owen-1155 are highly suspect because the county did not exist before 1721. The only records that can be found for a Joanna Owen in the early 1700's in that area of Virginia are for Owen-3242. Owen-1155 and Owen3242 show the same death location.

Joanna was born in Henrico County, NOT Prince George County. William & Lydia never lived in Prince George County. There was a different man named William Owen in Prince George County but he was not Joanna's father. Also, the fag sources cited for her place of death say Pittsylvania County, NOT Patrick County.
