In Oklahoma, John married Hettie Lewis, a Chickasaw Indian woman, and they had 4 daughters. His brother, Alfred, lived in the same county. Hettie Lewis was the sister of Alfred's wife, Bendie Lewis. In the 1910 census record, John's son, Clifton J. Owens (from his first marriage), lived with the couple and their children. 1910 census showed John to be a postmaster, and Clifton (spelled Clifford) as a clerk in the post office.
