Early Life

Family

Amanda married, Jonathan David Elms, son of Hadden "Uncle Hadd" Elms and wife Lucy, of the Locust Grove community.

Jonathan David Elms married first, Sarah Amanda "Mandy" Hankins in 1867. Their daughter Lucy married Granvill Fugett. Jonathan married second, Amanda Owens. He was killed in Texas, date unknown. [1] -- Amanda was the Civil War widow of Confederate David Jonathan Elms.

January 16, 1930, Grandview, Texas. Amanda filed for widow's pension, but it was returned since she had not been a resident of Johnson County, Texas for six months, as required.

May 13, 1930, a new application was submitted and approved.

November 8, 1938, a letter from J. M. Elms and B. B. Elms to the Honorable George H. Sheppard, of Austin, Texas, notification is made to him that Mrs. Amanda Elms of Maypearl, Texas is now visiting her sons in Stuart, Oklahoma. She is not able to return to Texas.

November 12, 1938, a letter from George H. Sheppard, Comptroller of Public Accounts, to Charley Lockhart, State Treasurer, Austin, Texas requests that payment on Confederate Pension warrants issued to Mrs. Amanda Elms of Maypearl, Texas be stopped. Pension file #46550, Johnson County, Texas. It is reported that Mrs. Elms is living in Oklahoma since February 1935.

November 2, 1938, Mrs. Amanda Elms returned seven pension warrants @ $25.00 each in the sum of $175.00 less $3.00 interest.

December 2, 1938, a letter to the Honorable George H. Sheppard from the Office of the County Judge, Holdenville, Hughes County, Oklahoma requests the service record of D. J. Elms. "Amanda Elms, his widow, has applied here for a Confederate Pension. She is 84 years of age and is unable to give me the information necessary."

December 4, 1938, a letter from Forest M. Elms to the Honorable George H. Sheppard of Austin, Texas returns eight unpaid warrants for his mother. "I don't know what to do with them as she hasn't any way to reimburse for them as she is a perfect invalid, she is 85 years old and is under care of doctor at all times."
