Biography

Josiah Owen, the eldest child of John Owen and Rebecca Wade, was born at Windsor September 8, 1651 and died there September 11, 1722.[1]

Marriages

Josiah married twice.

  • He married on 22 Oct 1674, as his first wife, to Mary Osborn (b 16 Apr 1655, d 6 Aug 1689), the daughter of John Osborn and Ann Oldage of East Windsor.[1]
  • He then married as his 2nd, to Sarah ____. Sarah married after Josiah's death, on 17 Jan 1722/3, to Nathaniel Holcomb of Simsbury.[1]

Children

Josiah and Mary had 7 children: Josiah, Isaac, Mary, Abigail, Esther, Elizabeth, and John.[1]

Josiah and Sarah had one child, Rachel, born November 25, 1692.[1]

Property and Positions

Josiah removed from Windsor and became one of the proprietors of Simsbury, Connecticut. Beginning in 1679, he received grants and made purchases and sales of many properties at Simsbury.[1]

About 1697, Josiah returned to Windsor where he lived until his death.[1]

Death and Legacy

Josiah mentioned in his nuncupative will: his wife Sarah, Elizabeth wife of Samuel Case, Mary wife of Enoch Phelps, Rachel wife of Samuel Phelps, Abigail wife of Samuel Clark, Josiah Owen, and John Owen.[1] The nuncupative Will is found In Manwaring's Digest of Early Connecticut Probate records and states that Josiah left the remainder and residue of his Estate "to be equally divided amongst his children." The Final Distribution in March of 1724/25 included distributions to Josiah Owen, Eldest son, John Owen, Mary Phelps, Elizabeth Case and Rachel Phelps. Abigail Clark is not included within the Final Distribution.[2]

Is it possible Sarah’s maiden name was Eno? Sarah Eno married first to Benajah Holcomb b. 1644. The last spouse of Sarah, widow of Josiah Owen, was Nathaniel Holcomb, the b/o Benajah Holcomb. If Sarah Eno was married to two Holcomb brothers and Josiah Owen then Benajah’s dod that many have posted is way off. It could have been confused with that of his son, which has been listed in one place as 1716. However this does not account for Sarah’s producing a daughter Rachel when she was with husband Josiah Owen in 1692. At the time of Josiah’s death in 1722 a wife Sarah is listed. If Sarah was Rachel’s mother then she was with Josiah from 1692 to 1722, which includes the year 1716 in which Benajah may have died. I checked in the Congregational church records of Simsbury when all of Josiah’s children were baptized in 1698. However no mother is listed for the Owen children or any other children baptized. The record states Josiah Owen of Windsor had his children baptized in Simsbury.” One possible resolution to this would be that Josiah had a second wife other than Sarah Eno by whom he had Rachel, then later in or after 1716 he married Sarah (Eno) Holcomb as his third wife. I could find no marriage record for Josiah other than the E. Windsor marriage to Mary Osbourne. Another resolution would be that Benajah Holcomb b. 1644 who fathered his last child born 1690 was dead by around 1690 and not in 1716. Mary Osbourne d. 1689. Then both the spouses of Josiah Owen and Sarah (Eno) Holcomb would have died at about the same time. What accounts for Josiah going to Simsbury to have his children baptized? Sarah Eno was originally from there. The find a grave site has this for the date of death with burial details unknown (which means this could well be inaccurate) of Benajah b. 1644:

25 Jan 1737 (aged 92) Windsor, Hartford County, Connecticut, USA.

Owen-1509 and Owen-4420 appear to represent the same person because: Hallo, right person! I believe these two are the same :D.
