Biography

Birth and Origins

John Pabodie was probably born in England between 1585 and 1590.

John's son, Francis, was on the 1635 passenger list for the ship Planter, where the minister's certificate for his oath of allegiance was from St. Albans, Hertfordshire.[1] But there is no assurance that approximately 40 years earlier John was born in the place his son took the oath of allegiance.

Immigration to New England

It is unknown exactly when John or his family immigrated to New England. However, his son, Francis, immigrated to New England on the ship Planter in 1635.[2] A passenger list for the ship dated 2 April 1635 was transcribed by Savage, with the following forward:

"Theis underwritten names are to be transported to New England, imbarqued in the Planter, Nic. Trarice, master, bound thither. The parties have brought certificate from the minister of Great St. Albans in Hertfordshire, and attestacon from the Justices of Peace according to the Lords' order."

In that list is: ":husbandman Francis Peboddy, 21"

John and his family most likely traveled about the same time as Francis, as John was listed as a freeman in Plymouth Colony in 1637.[3]

He was mentioned as one of the proprietors of Bridgewater in 1645.[4]

Marriage and Children

About 1608 he married. His wife was named either Isabel Harper or Isabel Brittaine in England by 1620.[5] These two profiles might represent the same person. If so, John Pabodie married a widow. At least four children born to the family and were listed in his will of 1649:[6]

  • Thomas
  • Francis
  • William
  • Annis (Anice)

The Fales Family of Bristol... claims that John married Isabel Brittaine at Nosely, Leicestershire.[7]

Death and Probate

He died in Duxbury and was buried at the Myles Standish Burial Ground about April 27, 1667.

His will was written 16 Jul 1649. Within the will he mentions his eldest son Thomas, second son Francis and youngest son William, as well as William's son, John. He names his daughter Annis Rouse, her husband John Rouse, and their son John. He mentioned his wife Isabel.[8][9]

Research Notes

Disputed parents and origins

The parents of this person are unknown. There are many family trees that conjecture about the parents, but they do not include sources. For example, a previous version of this profile claimed his parents were John Pabodie and Agnes Unknown, but without evidence supporting the claim, they have been detached.

St. Albans, Hertfordshire and Leicestershire, England have been provided as possible birth locations, but that, like his parents' names, is merely conjecture.

Until there is well-sourced evidence proving who his parents were, or where he was born, the information currently remains unknown.

I'd love to find out how to research if John is a distant relative of mine. My Peabody ancestors all originated in Leicestershire, England, where John was married, but I only go as far back as Samuel Paybody - Paybody-4 https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Paybody-4 who was born in 1710

This profile was created through the import of a GEDCOM file and contains no source citations. Although the birth and death dates are slightly off, they are close enough that it seems to represent the same man as John Pabodie (abt.1587-abt.1667). Because there are no family members linked to this profile, and no sources attached, it seems reasonable to merge this profile into Pabodie-17 which is currently set up as an unmatched merge, which should be carried out.

Genealogies of Mayflower Families, Vol. I - page 19 - lists John born 4 Oct 1645, son of Elizabeth Alden and Wm Pabodie, died 17 Nov 1669 in Duxbury. Death was caused by fractured skull whilst riding his horse and when his head struck a tree.

Beryl, it looks like that information is already on William's profile. Was there something particular you were thinking as far as mentioning it here, as John b. 1645 was the grandson of the John of this profile?

My intent was to help with the proposed merge, in that the other profile needs it's birth date corrected.

No merge would be needed on this profile.

Scott, you removed "inferior" sources, which I mostly agree with, as they were generic references to Ancestry or Millenium File with no links or other info. However, there were two NEHGS sources that have specific links. I do not have access to those through the paywall, but wonder if they are valid and should be returned to the profile? Can anyone verify?

Or perhaps those are directing to the same source as the NEHGS Vol 3 link at HathiTrust?

Jonathan, yes, the HathiTrust are the new links. I have access to American Ancestors so I was able to find out what the links were to in NEHGR and replaced those paywall links with the HathiTrust links which are not behind a paywall. I will double check to make sure I got both of the AmAncestor links converted over and not just one.

Edit: it looks like I originally missed the second NEHGR vol 6 paywall source, so I added that as a non-paywall HathiTrust source.

Always nice to have fresh eyeballs on the lookout. Thanks for the info!

As an aside, the profile needs additional help as the PGM guidelines state that the biography should have inline citations but this profile only has the "See also" section with no inline source citations.

It looks like Peabody-1177 is the same as Pabodie-17. Can tere be a merge?

Thanks

Thanks, Don! It looks like there is nothing much on the Peabody-1177 profile and it can simply be merged out of existence.

Do these parents actually belong? There is nothing in the bio.

It looks as though the biography of this article is making the same mistake a lot of Ancestry.com is making and is confusing Pabodie-17 (died in Bridgewater, 1667) and Pabodie-3 (died in Duxbury, 1669). Or am I missing something here?

There seems to be a generation inconsistency of listing Anice Peabody (born 1561) as a daughter of this John Pabodie born about 1585. Perhaps the daughter should be Annis Pabodie (born 1631) per Anderson, Robert Charles "Great Migration: Immigrants to New England, 1634-1635" (Volume VI, R-S) p.107
