Research Notes

Unknown Origins

Where did John Pace of Middlesex County come from? There are many thoughts and ideas on this:

First Idea: The principal clues to John Pace's origins before he came to Middlesex County are the description of him in a 1699 deed as "of Lancaster" (Roger Prichard to John Pace, DB2 p.286) and the fact that a few years later (Feb 1796) he named a son "Newsome" (Parish Register, Christ Church Middlesex).

  • Since John Pace appears to have lived in Lancaster County, at least in 1699, his son may have been named after the family of William Newsom, who on 29 Jan 1649, jointly with John Pine, Thomas Saxe and Roger Battersby, patented a total of 1350 acres "on the North side of Rappahannock River near Curritoman River mouth." Patent Book 2, p202).
  • William Newsom and John Pine appear to have been in partnership and were probably related by blood or marriage. The two appear in numerous records together, as for example the will of Robert Mascall, recorded 1653:
  • "Lancaster County, VA, Deeds & Wills and etc., Book 2, 1654-1702, pages 10 and 11 - Will of Robert Mascall. To William Newsom and John Pine a bill of 3,000 lbs. of tobacco. To Epaphroditus Lawson a bill of Richard Jones of 2300 lbs. tobacco. Calf to Mary Tomson... Dated 27 September 1653. Signed Robert (X) Mascall. Wits: Thomas Hank and Robert Parr or Pare. Robert Parr or Pare attested to the Will and indicated he was with him until his decease and to which Jurat. 8 November 1653, Will Gooch, Commissioner of York County."
  • (Epaphroditus Lawson, who along with William Newsom and John Pine received legacies from Robert Mascall, died himself at about the same time. His widow Elizabeth married (2) William Clapham Jr, and (3) Alexander Fleming.Alexia Fleming, daughter of Alexander Fleming and Elizabeth Madestard Lawson Clapham Fleming, married by 1683 Thomas Paice.)
  • William Newsom's partner John Pine was apparently a son of John Payne Sr of Rappahannock:
  • "I John Paine Senr. of ye County of Lancaster do give unto John Pine Junr. one heifer named Young Stewelin marked with 3 slits on ye right ear and crop and a halfe moon in ye left ear and a slit in ye crop. I John Paine do give unto my son Richard Paine one heifer named Young Coll marked with 3 slits in ye right ear a crop and a half moone in ye left ear. I do give the above written cattle and their increase to ye above written parties. John Paine Recorded in ye Court of Lancaster 10th day of September 1655.)"
  • This John Payne Sen. had land on Payne's Creek on the Corotoman, near the land patented by John Pine and William Newsom, as well as extensive landholdings on Pepetick Creek. He was married to Margaret (? Robinson), for whom he claimed headright (as Margaret Payne) in 1655 (Patent Book 4 p64).
  • In 1658, John Payne and John Catlett witnessed the nuncupative will of Richard Lawson, brother of the Epaphroditus Lawson whose widow became Thomas Paice's mother-in-law (see above).
  • John and Margaret Payne had four known children, Richard, John (William Newsome's partner), William, and George.George Payne married Jane White, a stepdaughter of Thomas Paice by his second wife, Jane _______ Bowcock White Harvey Paice.George Payne's will, recorded in Richmond County 2 May 1711, mentioned his "father" (stepfather) Thomas Pacey. (Wills of Richmond County, Virginia, 1699-1800, Headley, p.21)
  • To summarize: John Paine Sen. or Rappahannock was father of William Newsom's partner John Pine; witness to the nuncupative will of a relative of Thomas Paice's first wife (Alexia Fleming); and father of Thomas Paice's stepson by his second wife.If indeed John Pace's son was named for the Lancaster Newsoms, and if proof or convincing circumstantial evidence of that could be found, that would suggest quite strongly that John Pace of Middlesex County could have been related to Thomas Paice of Rappahannock, perhaps a brother. That would explain why John Pace had the money and necessary connections for his initial purchase in Middlesex, the land on Sunderland Creek which he bought from Henry Nicholls. For example, John Catlett (who in 1658 witnessed Epaphroditus Lawson's will together with John Paine), in 1653 witnessed a deed between Enoch Davis and Henry Nicholls Sr -- father of the Henry Nicholls who sold John Pace his land.
  • These links are tenuous and not necessarily significant, but they do show that Thomas Paice associated with some of the same people John Pace associated with.Kinship cannot be ruled out.

Second Idea: According to Pace family biographer, Robert Casey, John Pace was born in 1672 in Middlesex, Virginia. He might be the son of Richard Pace and Mary Knowles, but documentation is lacking.[15] Considerable controversy surrounding his parentage is discussed in Disputed Origins section below. YDNA Testing has also proven that Richard Pace was not the father of John Pace of Middlesex County, VA - See YDNA Results below.

Disputed Origins

There is a John Pace who was born in Wrockwardine, Shropshire, England and christened on 22 Sep 1665, the son of Joseph and Margaret Pace.[16][17] Wikitree researcher, Eric Daly, discovered a reference showing that a John Pace was buried in Sheriff Hales, Shropshire on 26 Dec 1731. (Shropshire Parish Registers : diocese of Lichfield, Vol. VII, p. 317) He says that this is only 11 miles from Wrockwardine. This is decent circumstantial evidence that they are the same John Pace, more than we have for him immigrating to Middlesex. Additionally, John Pace of Sheriff Hales married Elizabeth Inglethorp in 1699 and had several children with her. (p. 283)

He has been detached from Joshua Pace as father due to lack of evidence. Do not reattach parents without first discussing with the project and on G2G. There is also controversy and lack of quality evidence that his father is Richard Pace. See this collection of online/email discussions.[18]

PACE Family YDNA Testing Results through FTDNA

MAJOR FINDING 1: The original, main goal of the project was to determine whether there was a genetic relationship between Richard Pace of Jamestown, VA and John Pace of Middlesex Co., VA. Y-chromosome (YDNA) testing has verified that the two Pace men are NOT related on the surname line.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

Is there any basis for believing this is the same John Pace, other than the fact that they have the same name? There are many disputed theories concerning this John's origins.

I have detached Joshua Pace-1418 that was recently attached as father and added a note in the bio. No parents should be attached without first discussing with the project and on the G2G forum.
Hi! I've added PPP and US Southern Colonies Project as a manager to support it.

I see where YDNA has proven that Richard Pace of Charles City, Virginia is NOT Related to John Pace of Middlesex. FTDNA has proven that their YDNA is NOT Related. Here is their Halo-groups: Our John of Middlesex line belongs to haplogroup I-M223, while the Richard Pace of Jamestown line belongs to haplogroup R-M269.6 7

So, Richard Pace should be removed as John Pace's father.

Pace-2765 and Pace-28 appear to represent the same person because: Same name, exact same spouse on both profiles. Same death date. No descendants in Pace-2765 so this isn't adding any other people to Pace-28. This is just removing a duplicate.

Thank you for reviewing, Teresa (WikiTree Arborist)

Pace-2113 Unmerged Match

Unfortunately, I removed the unmerged match without enough investigation. My apologies. Possibly some incorrect merges have taken place.

This line has some issues. The eldest son, John Pace is the identical profile. Sources are unclear as to primary evidence. Please make sure the next generation works before merging. Thanks!
