Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Charlotte (Pace) Lee was a South Carolina colonist.

The deed of February 21, 1797 establishes that Charlotte is a daughter of Richard Pace and that she married Ludbrook Lee. See the profile of her father for details.

Her tombstone[1] further establishes her identity. "CHARLOTTE LEE WIFE OF LUDBROOK LEE". The tombstone is not modern, unlike that of her son Martin Lee, but it does not really look like a mid-19th-century tombstone. She died in 1845.

An 1830 lawsuit involving the heirs of Harman Hitt states that Harman's son Peter had children Charlotte Lee, Tilman Hitt, and Fanny Pierce, married to Thomas Pierce. In 1824 Tilman Hitt and Thomas Pierce are in Dallas Co., Alabama. In October 1824 they apply for letters of administration on the estate of Peter Hitt, dec'd. It would be natural to believe that the Charlotte Lee in the 1830 census in Dallas Co. is Peter Hitt's daughter and Tilman Hitt's sister except for the evidence that she is Charlotte Day. The birth year of Charlotte on her tombstone (1763) is also incompatible with the birth date of Peter Hitt (1 Feb 1755).
