Biography

Susanna Packard was born March 11, 1724 in Bridgewater, Plymouth, Massachusetts Bay. Her parents were Solomon Packard and Susanna Kingman.[1][2][3] She was baptisedin West Bridgewater on April 26, 1724.[4]

Susanna married Joseph Alden December 16, 1742 in Bridgewater.[5][6] They had ten children:[1]

  1. Zenas born March 16, 1744/45 and died young.[7]

Susanna's sister, Martha, married Isaac Alden, the second cousin of Joseph on Nov. 6, 1755. [1][5]

According to Mitchell, Susanna was daughter of Solomon Packard. The only dates he mentions regarding Susanna is her 1742 marriage to Joseph Alden and the births of her 2 daughters: Zenas 1745 and Martha 1747. Both children passed away young or left no issue. Susanna's husband, Joseph, passed away at age 50 in Worcester. [10]

After Joseph passed away, Susanna (Mis Susanah Aldin of Stafford) married second Capt. Richard Dresser on March 24, 1773 as his second wife. Marriage was in Stafford, Tolland County, Connecticut where she passed away June of 1806.[1]

Susanna Packard Alden passed away at 82 during June of 1806. Her burial was in Old Stafoord Street Cemetery in Stafford, Connecticut.[11]

Research Notes

Married name is ALDEN Susanna is very often mistaken for the one who married "Joseph Allen" in 1742 at Bridgewater.[15] The 1st church at Bridgewater incorrectly recorded "Joseph Allen" when it should have said "Alden" in this marriage record, and vital record compilations that cite this source can make the same mistake. But according to the East Bridgewater VR, a separate record "from a Harris family bible, now in the possession of Mrs. Fred Aldridge of Bridgewater" recorded the name as Alden. And Volume 16 Part 3 of "Mayflower Families Fifth Generation Descendants" elucidates on p.114-116 the life and family of Joseph Alden, including his marriage to Susanna Packard.

NOT descended from Cooke's (Mayflower) line[13] Lists children of Solomon and Susanna Kingman Packard with their birthdates which agrees with current WIkiTree profiles. Their lineage included Experience Mitchell and not Mayflower descendant, Jane Cooke.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Susanna by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Susanna:

Packard-358 and Packard-92 appear to represent the same person because: As mentioned on the profile of Packard-358, that Susannah was created as spouse of Joseph Allen. But Susannah Packard married Joseph Alden -- a common mistake because of a misspelling in a Bridgewater Church record. So the profiles are clearly duplicates, the only issue now being the mysterious 1764 death year given for Packard-358. But that date is not sourced on her profile and a search of the American Ancestors database indicates no candidate death record for Sarah Allen or Alden in 1764. And that date cannot be right since she had two children born after that year.

Since there were no objections, I am removing Susannah as wife of Joseph Allen and as the mother of his children. I will then propose a merge of her profile with the one married to Joseph Alden

Multiple sources say that the marriage record at the 1st church at Bridgewater incorrectly recorded "Joseph Allen" when it should have said "Alden". According to the East Bridgewater VR, a separate record "from a Harris family bible, now in the possession of Mrs. Fred Aldridge of Bridgewater" recorded the name as Alden. And Volume 16 Part 3 of "Mayflower Families Fifth Generation Descendants" elucidates on p.114-116 the life and family of Joseph Alden, including his marriage to Susanna Packard.

So I propose to merge this profile with Packard-92 as clear duplicate, but first this profile must be removed as mother from the listed children. If there are no objections, I will perform these actions in a few days.
