Biography

Nicholas Paine was probably born in Eastham, Plymouth Colony, say 1663. He was the son of Thomas and Mary (Snow) Paine.[1]

He married Hannah Higgins about 1699, probably in Eastham. She was the daughter of Jonathan and Elizabeth (Rogers) Higgins, probably born Eastham about 1672 and died there on 24 January 1731/2.[1]

On 29 January 1714/5, “Nicholas Paine and wife Hannah sell to their brother, Jonathan Higgins Jr., a parcel of land given by our grandfather, Lieut. Joseph Rogers, in his last will and testament unto our honoured mother, Elizabeth Higgins deceased, both upland and swamp, our own absolute estate. Signed Nicholas Paine, Hannah Paine her mark.” [2]

Nicholas settled at Keaskakogansett and was a miller and farmer “and had not much to do with public affairs.” [3]

The will of Nicholas Paine of Eastham, dated 29 July 1732 and proved 16 January 1732/3, mentioned daughter Priscilla and her husband William Norcut; grandchildren Thankful Smith and Lois Freeman; daughters Abigail Higgins and Lydia Young; "cousin" (nephew) William Paine.[4]

He died in Eastham between 29 July 1732 and 16 January 1732/3, the dates that his will was written and proved.[4]

Children of Nicholas and Hannah (Higgins) Paine, first six recorded Eastham,[5] last from his will:[1]

  1. Thankful Paine, b. 14 Mar 1699/1700.
  2. Priscilla Paine, b. 16 Oct 1701.
  3. Phillip Paine, b. 18 Nov 1704; d. 10 Apr 1725 Eastham.
  4. Lois Paine, b. 29 Sep 1705.
  5. Abigail Paine, b. 03 Aug 1707.
  6. Hannah Paine, b. 24 Sep 1709; not mentioned in father's 1732 will; n.f.r.
  7. Lydia Paine.

Probate

His probate records include:[4]

The estate was appraised on 12 Dec. 1733 for £512, 3s. [6]

In 1868 a rock was taken from the homestead on the easterly side of the road bearing the letters “N.P.” It was below the hill where Nicholas’ wind mill stood. [6]
