Biography

Stephen Paine Jr immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).

Stephen Paine Jr. was born about 1629 at Great Ellingham, Norfolk, England son of Stephen Paine and Neele Adcocke, and came to New England with his parents in August, 1638 on the Diligent. [1]

Stephen Paine took the Oath of Fidelity in 1657. He became a prominent landowner in Swansea and Rehoboth, Massachusetts. He was an active participant in King Philip's War in 1675, contributing both money and personal services to the cause.

Stephen married Ann Chickering on on November 3, 1652 at Dedham, MA. [2][3] [1] Anne was born in England, daughter of Francis Chickering and his first wife Ann/Annis Fiske, of Suffolk, England who came to Dedham, Massachusetts by 1639. [4] [5] [6]

On October 17, 1658, Anne's stepmother Sarah, was appointed administrator of Francis Chickering's estate and was granted her dower. The division of the remainder of the estate, including house, lands, debts and goods, were to go the the five daughters, accounting for L100 already given to Stephen Paine, as part of his wife's portion. [7]

Stephen was buried at Rehoboth, Massachusetts on January 24, 1677/8. [1] [8]

His estate was inventoried on May 16, 1678 and assessed at L585: 10:11. He left no will but eldest son Stephen presented the Plymouth Court with a written 'manifestation of his wishes in order of the disposal of his estate', naming the following: [9][10]

  • third son Samuel
  • fourth son Nathaniel
  • fifth son Benjamin
  • daughter Rebecca, wife of Samuel Pecke
  • daughters Mary, Elizabeth and Sarah [9]

In his father Stephen Paine Sr's. will written on July 18, 1679, he left bequests to:

  • grandson Samuel Paine
  • grandson John Paine
  • grandson Nathaniel, son of Nathaniel
  • grandsons Nathaniel and Benjamin, sons of son Stephen, deceased
  • daughter-in-law Anne Paine
  • grand daughters Elizabeth and Sarah [1]

Anne married second, Thomas Metcalf on December 2, 1679, as his second wife. [1] [8]

Anne died on January 1, 1688 at Dedham, Massachusetts. [1] [3]

Stephen and Anne's youngest son Benjamin died about May, 1698 at Bristol, Rhode Island. He left L20 to his brother John Paine, with the remainder being divided among his siblings. In the final accounting on October 30, 1700, the remaining estate was divided among:

  • brother Nathaniel Paine, brother Stephen Paine. brother Samuel Paine
  • brothers-in-law Samuel Peck; Enoch Hunt; Jacob Pepper; Daniel Aldis [9]

(from Find a Grave Memorial) Born in Great Ellington, Norfolk, England. Married Anna Chickering 3 Nov 1652 in Rehoboth MA. Died in 1677/8. He was born in Norfolk County, England in 1629. He emigrated to Hingham, Massachusetts Bay, [Hingham, Plymouth, Massachusetts, United States Of America] with his parents, in the ship "Dililgent" in 1638, and then to Rehobeth in 1643. Stephen served under Major John Bradford in King Philip's War in 1675. He was a tanner by occupation and was active in town affairs. He married Ann Checkering (1616), the daughter of Francis and Ann (Fiske) Chickering on November 3, 1652 and she bore him nine children. He died intestate at Rehobeth where he was buried on Jan 24, 1677/8. The inventory of his estate dated May 1678 was valued at L585-10s-11d. Source: Savage 3:335; Pepper Gen. p. 17

Stephen was only 14 ish when Rehoboth was incorporated as Rehoboth in 1643, so the previous must be a pleasant piece of exaggerated fiction.

"His son, Stephen the second, removed to a little village then called Indian Seacouck, and changed the name to Rehoboth."
