Biography

Samuel Paine was a son of Samuel and Mary (Penniman) Paine, born at Braintree, Massachusetts. Braintree records and published genealogies contain discordant dates for his birth and baptism. Sprague reported a recorded birthdate of 26 November 1684 and recorded baptism date of 2 December 1683 and noted that the date discrepancy was in the records;[1] the latter date is from church records and vital records of Quincy (formerly in Braintree), which show Samuel, son of Samuel Payn and Mary Payn, baptized on the 2nd day of the 10th month (i.e., December) in 1683.[2] The 1880 publication Paine Family Records states that he was born on 26 March 1684.[3]

Samuel Payne resided in Braintree, Massachusetts, in the section of town that in 1793 was split off to become the town of Randolph. His home was on the east side of North St., just north of the brook, and south of the cemetery. He was elected surveyor in 1713, fenceviewer in 1721, surveyor in 1722, constable in 1726 but refused the office, tithingman in 1728. Sprague indicates that he probably was the Samuel Payne who was surveyor of highways in 1735 and 1741. He was a partner in the Land Bank Scheme of 1740.[1]

He married Rachel Hayden, daughter of Nehemiah Hayden, by 1711. Rachel (Hayden) Payne died 3 October 1739 in an epidemic that also killed six of their children.[3][4]

After Rachel's death, Samuel married again on 7 July 1741. His second wife was Ruth (Littlefield) Dyer, widow of John Dyer and daughter of Edmund and Elizabeth (Mott) Littlefield.[1]

Samuel Payne died before 17 October 1763, when his will was proved. His wife Ruth survived as his widow.[1]

Children

Samuel's children with his first wife, Rachel, all born at Braintree, were:[5][6]

  1. Rachel, born Dec. 22, 1711,[5] or Dec. 22, 1712;[6] died same day.
  2. Rachel, born Sep. 21, 1712,[5] or Sept. 21, 1713;[6] died July 20, 1739
  3. Samuel (3rd), born 26 August 1714; died Jun. 20, 1739. Samuel Payne 3rd was elected hogreave in 1738/9 for the South Precinct of Braintree.
  4. Stephen, born 8 Jan. 1717; died July 18 1739
  5. Rebecca, baptized Aug. 30, 1719 (Middle Parish of Braintree), married Jun. 11, 1737 at Boston, to John Allen Jr. "both of Braintree". She died 14 August 14, 1739, leaving a daughter Silence who is mentioned in the will of her father Samuel Payne.
  6. Nehemiah, born 6 May 1721 died Aug 31 1739.
  7. Peter, baptized May 19, 1723 (Middle Parish). Removed to Stafford, Conn. before 1745, and Nine Partners, Dutchess Co., N.Y. before 1747.
  8. Ebenezer (twin), born December 22, 1724.[7]
  9. Enoch (twin), born 22 December 1724.[8] If he existed, he evidently died before 1739.
  10. Jacob, born Aug. 18, 1728; married Rachel.
  11. Hannah, born Feb. 8, 1730/1 (per Thayer Memorial; Sprague states "not on record now"); she married Deering Spear Jr. She had a son with John Vinton; in 1754 her father deeded 2 acres of land "for love and good will" to John Vinton, "the reputed son" of John Vinton & Hannah Payne. [9]
  12. Enoch, baptized May 6, 1739 (So. Parish), died July 31, 1739
  13. Samuel, born 26 Aug 1714, died June 28 1739.

Samuel had two daughters with his second wife, Ruth, both baptized in the Braintree South Parish on 14 March 1742:[5]

  1. Rachel, married John Stetson.
  2. Rebecca, married John Hunt, Jr.

Will

Samuel Payne made his will on 1 June 1759; it was filed for probate on 17 October 1763. The will contained an unusual insult directed at his widow: "To that woman that lives with me, called my wife, Ruth Payne, so much of my estate as she can get by law, and no more, for she is a very imprudent and bad woman and hath hurt my estate many hundred of pounds by giving and selling out of my house things that did not belong to her. I know she doth not deserve any of my estate and I hope she will not get much of it." The will also made provision for sons Peter, Ebenezer, and Jacob; daughters Hannah Payne, Rachel Payne, and Rebecca Hunt; grandson Stephen Payne; and granddaughter Silence Allen. [10]

It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Samuel by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Samuel:
