Biography

Samuel Paine, son of Stephen and Hannah (Bass) Paine, was born on 4 December 1654 in Braintree, Massachusetts.[1][2]

As a young man, he had military service in King Philip's War.[3]

He married Mary Penniman, daughter of James and Lydia (Eliot) Penniman, on 4 April 1678.[1][2]

Samuel and his wife Mary were admitted to full communion in the Braintree church on 30, March 1690, having transferred from the old or 1st church of Boston. [2]

Mary died, and on Dec. 20, 1726 Samuel married his second wife, Rebecca Derby, widow of Edward Derby and of Aaron Hobart, of Hingham. She was a daughter of Roger and Mary (Josselyn) Sumner of Milton.[2]

In Braintree, Samuel was elected constable in 1693; surveyor of highways for Monatiquot in 1694; also tithingman in 1694, 1698, and 1702; surveyor in 1704; tithingman in 1705, 1707, 1711, 1713, 1714, 1715; and sealer of weights and measures in 1723. [2]

Samuel Paine died in Braintree on 10 December 1739 "in 86th yr."[4] There is no probate record.[2]

  4. Hannah Paine, born Feb. 1, 1687 ("Anna" baptized May 8, 1687), m. Thomas Fenton of Bristol and Braintree.
  5. Joseph, born Aug. 3, 1689. Married Sarah Powell.
  6. Mehitable Paine, born Dec. 8, 1693, married on Dec. 10, 1719, David Ames or Eames.
  7. Benjamin, born Dec. 28, 1696 died in 1745 on expedition to Cape Breton Is.
