Biography

This profile is part of the Menzies Name Study.
Martha (Paine) Means is a member of Clan Menzies.

Martha Paine was born in 1702 in Ireland. She was the daughter of Robert Paine and Margaret Dinwittie.[1] She lived with her parents in Basking Ridge Township, Somerset County, New Jersey. The family may have moved before 1721 to Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, as she is said to have married there.[2]

In 1721, she married William Means in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. They were the parents of the following children:

  2. Isabella Means, born 1728, died 18 Aug 1815; married before 1750 to Hamilton Rogers[4]
  3. Samuel Means, born about 1730, died about 1821
  4. Elizabeth Means, born 15 Jul 1733, died 15 May 1803; married Capt. William McCalla[5]
  5. Robert Means, born 1735, died 1822; married Elizabeth Robertson[6]
  6. Mary Means, born 12 Dec 1735, died 9 Feb 1813; married 1757 to William Davis Sr.
  7. Isaac Means, born 1745, died Jan 1810 married and had a child

By 1726, Martha and her husband were apparently living in Plumstead Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. In 1728 they were in Tinnicum Township, Bucks County, PA. They may have taken refuge from Native American attacks by returning to Basking Ridge, New Jersey for the birth of their son Samuel in 1730. In Jul 1733 Martha was in Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania for the birth of Elizabeth, and was back in Bucks County in 1735 where they apparently stayed for a time. In 1745 they were in Lancaster County when Isaac was born and later returned to Bucks County.[2]

Martha died on 27 Dec 1772 in Doylestown, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, and was buried at Deep Run Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Bedminster, Bucks County, Pennsylvania.[7]

At least one researcher gives her birth as about 1710, Basking Ridge, Somerset County, New Jersey[8] and gives her date of marriate as about 1734 in Pennsylvania.[8]

Thank you for calling this to my attention. The William Means (Means-434) has little information, but refers back to the Means Genealogy http://www.oocities.org/revdan01/Means/pafg04.htm#4080 and agrees, more or less, with my source, The Means Family in America, by Foglesong, Elizabeth Cissel, 1976, where I got some of my information. The reference for Means-434 on the Web Page is to "an outdated, user-generated website" from an archive.

I believe Means-434 is intended to be the same person as Means-430. The Means-430 William was supposed to be age 21 when he came to America. His marriage about 1734 is more compatible with the family he is believed to have had with Martha. Means-434 William's marriage to Martha when she was about 46 years old is unlikely to have produced very many children.

A merge of the Means-434 and Means-430 is in the rejected merges file; apparently the Profile Manager for Means-434 does not think they are the same person. Means-434 William has an extra generation to reach him from their ancestor Josiah Means, who, according to the above outdated website, was born 1663 in Enniskillen, Fermanaugh, Ireland. This John Means is supposed to have died about 1742 in Burlington County, New Jersey. According to the same website, this John Means was the father of another John Means, (who has much of the same data as John the father of Means-430 William, except) it is said he was born about 1687 in Basking Ridge, Somerset, NJ, which was actually formed 1688. That John Means is said to have married a Dinwiddie about 1707 and was the father of Means-434 William.

More work needs to be done to establish whether any John Means was in New Jersey early enough to have had a son born 1687 in Somerset, NJ. I can no longer use the LDS Branch Library to look up county records not available on-line. The Means line through just one John who had a son Means-430 William appears most likely to me. This family was in Bucks, PA from about 1720, having come first to Boston in 1718. This may be a subject we should put on G2G for discussion; perhaps someone out there knows more facts.

Paine-2779 and Paine-2021 only share one child in common: Jean (Means) Hart. I saw no source for the information on Find-A-Grave. I don't trust those lists, because I've found too many mistakes in them. I am concerned about the differences in birth and death dates. I will message Burl Salmon and get another opinion. However, if you keep all the children, I have no big objection, even though I don't show those daughters, Mary and Isabelle.

Paine-2021 and Paine-1143 appear to represent the same person because: These are duplicate profiles she did originate in Ireland per Find A Grave. The spouse is common and per the FAG record all the children in the two profiles are correct.
