Biography

John Paine (1692-1756) was married three times. His first wife, Mary Hart came from Thistleworth (Isleworth) across the river from Richmond. They were married at Westminster on 7 July 1718, their marriage recorded in the Register of Clandestine Marriages. Mary died a few years later either in 1724 or 1729 and they had no children. Susanna, his second wife, may have been the Susanna Ryden who married a John Payne (sic) at nearby Long Ditton and Tolworth in Surrey on 18 August 1726. She died in January 1746 apparently without bearing him any children. His third wife, whom he married in Richmond on 6 May 1746 just a few months after Susanna died, was Martha Shepherd or Sheppard. She is believed to have come from Daventry in Northamptonshire, where one of her sisters, Mary Shepherd had married a William Grubb in about 1729. The Grubb family became linked to the Paines of Richmond in the next generation, when Sarah Grubb, the daughter of a William and Mary Grubb of Daventry, married John Paine’s nephew, Thomas (1728-1800). John and Martha had no children. John died in 1756, and in his Will, he left everything to his wife Martha, comprising “all that my Copyhold Messuage or Tenement and all other the Premisses to the same belonging and wherein I now dwell and which I lately purchased of Mrs Mary Matthews of Richmond aforesaid and also all and Singular my Goods Chattels Credits whatsoever and wheresoever that I shall dye possessed of or that shall be due and owing unto me at the time of my decease.”

Martha died in 1777.
