Biography

In 1861, after the remarriage of his mother, Mathew was living with his maternal grandparents, John and Ester Weatherley at Love Lane, Iver in Buckinghamshire. In 1871, at the age of 21, he was an agricultural labourer, lodging in Dockwell Lane, next door to The Jolly Waggoners Public House on the Bath Road at Hounslow. He later moved to Wells in Somerset, where he married Matilda Seal in 1878 and was working as a gardener. They had ten children, Matilda in 1878, Matthew John James in 1880, Phoebe Elizabeth in 1883, Annie in 1884, Ezekiel in 1886 (born in Andover), Harry William in 1888, Mary in 1890, Henrietta in 1892, Roland in 1895 and Wilfred in 1897. Phoebe died in 1897 aged seven. Matthew at first worked as a domestic gardener and lived at 3 Morgan’s Court in Wells. By 1891 and through to the census of 1901, he was a labourer working at a local paper mill. Mathew died in Wells in1929.
