Biography

According to Anderson, 2015 (The Great Migration Directory, page 250), Robert Paine came from Suffolk, England, to Ipswich, Massachusetts, by 1639, so Robert Paine Jr. was presumably just a boy at the time. There is apparently a reference to Robert Paine in the Ipswich Town Records, page 67. Another reference listed by Anderson is NEHGR 4: 180 and 31:161.

The marriage of Ann Whiting and Robert Paine (Sr) and the birth of their two sons John and Robert Jr. is well-proved by the will of Ann's father, John Whiting in which he bequeaths to his son-in-law Robert Paine/Payne and lists Robert's two sons, John and Robert. The will was written 2 Apr 1637 at Hadleigh, Suffolk (England) before Robert emigrated to New England and gives John's house and land at Newton called "Saracen Head" to Robert. The language of the will strongly implies that Ann Whiting Paine was dead by this date as it does NOT mention Ann at all but bequeaths to Robert (jr) and John, "the two sons that he (i.e. Robert) had by my daughter".[1] John Whiting was evidently fairly wealthy as he bequeathed gifts of 500 and 700 pounds along with land and other items. John Whiting Sr. also required that Robert "seal a release to my son John Whiting for all former promises" which seems to meen that John Jr. must have owed Robert money. The will of John Whiting Jr on the next page of the source written 16 Jan 1643 at Hadleigh, Suffolk (England) then goes on to forgive a 100 pound debt from "my brother Payne in New England"

Regarding his marriage(s), Torrey in "New England Marriages to 1700" says this:

PAINE, Robert & Elizabeth REINER/RAYNER/REYNOR; 10 Jul 1666, 11? Jul; Ipswich/Wells, ME[2]

This profile asserted that Robert Paine Jr. was probably first married to an unknown wife in the early 1650s, and they had son Ralph but without source. A daughter Dorcas is also attached, but also has no source for her birth or apparently for her surname.[citation needed]

By Elizabeth, Robert had two children appearing in Ipswich Vital Records (if this is the same couple):[3]

  1. Elizabeth b. 16 Jun 1677
  2. John 24 Oct 1684

One of Torrey's sources (Paine #8) is flawed as it asserts that John and Robert Jr were born at Ipswich when in fact they were born in Suffolk, England before 1637 as shown by the will of John Whiting Sr, father of Robert Payne Sr.'s wife Anne Whiting.

It gives the children of Robert Paine Jr. and Elizabeth Reiner:

  1. Elizabeth born June 15, 1677, married Daniel Smith, and died 1717
  2. John born Oct. 24, 1684
  3. Robert who died Dec. 24, 1693 (another problem as this date is generally assigend to Robert Paine Jr, husband of Elizabeth Reiner)
  4. Dorcas who married Matthew Whipple, son of Lt. Col. John Whipple. No children are spoken of as born to either.[4]

The book does not state it's sources. The births of Elizabeth and John match the Ipswich Vital Records but Robert and Dorcas do not appear in the VR and nowhere is there a mention of "Ralph".

Is there an entry for any Robert Paine in Robert Anderson's Great Migration Directory?

Thank you in advance.--Gene

Yes, The Great Migration Directory (2015) has Robert Paine from Suffolk, England, to Ipswich, Mass., by 1639. That would be Robert Paine Sr. since Robert Jr. was presumably still a boy at the time. I have noted this in the biography above. And I also noted this in the profile of Robert Paine Sr.

Paine-793 and Paine-47 appear to represent the same person because: Same dates and places of birth and death; same parents.
