Research Notes

Note H00190Question re: parents-- Could it be that the reason I can't figure out who raised Obed is that his mother was widowed while he was a child and remarried?? Need to check on any woman named Dorcas/ Darkis in the 9-Ptrs area? (Could she have been the Dorcas Smith attending the wedding of Valentine Brown and Lucretia Vail 4/4/1771 along with Obed?) But... Josephine Frost's transcription of the witnesses shows her as Dinah Smith.
From records of Cornwall MM:
7:1792: "He appeared at this meeting and offered a paper condemning some misconduct" A committee finds 9:1792 "his behavior toward some Young Woman hath occasioned Reproach to the Society and are of the mind that what he has offered is not sufficient to take it away" Disowned 22:10:1792. Appealed to Quarterly Mtg, which replied: "through weakness fell into some disreputable conduct towards some Young Woman which hath caused the Truth to be reproached" Disowned 6:1793. Ack. misconduct 6:1794. Committee found 10:1794 "not in a Suitable State of Mind". Again 8:1795 "not deeply enough sensible of his error" 3:1796. Finally accepted 2:1798 and his son, John granted membership 11:1798.
15:9:1825-- "a difficulty has arisen concerning the estate of Obediah, deceased, that requires assistance of the preparative mtg."

Siblings are based on conclusions drawn by Horace Palmer in "Palmer Families of America." However, I believe they are incorrect. Obediah probably did have a brother named Samuel, but the others are only speculative. Palmer Families bases them on a family Bible of a Samuel Palmer in New Hampshire who he believes is Obed's father. (He lists the names in the Bible without Obed's name, but then later says it is there in his narrative). I have been in contact (years ago) with a descendant of that Samuel who had seen the Bible. He told me Obediah is not actually named there, while the three siblings are listed. I do not believe the Samuel who went to NH is Obed's father. In fact, I think Obed came from the William of Westchester Palmer line, not the Lt. William Palmer line to which Horace Palmer attached him. The Westchester line is where the name Obadiah appears several times.

I have no idea how any of this can be demonstrated in the tree.
