In the 1850 census, 11-year-old John was residing in Macoupin, Macoupin, Illinois, United States with his parents and five siblings.[1]
John Palmer married twice. John married first Sarah Collins on 23 August 23, 1859 in Edgar, Illinois, United States.[2] They had eight children in their on-again off-again life together while he was a traveling preacher and lecturer.
In the 1860 census, Clergyman John (age 21) was residing with Sarah in Padua Township, McLean, Illinois, United States.[3] In the 1870 census, Clergyman J A (age 31) was living in Waldo Township, Livingston, Illinois, United States with Sarah and four children.[4] In the 1880 census, Farmer John A (age 41) was the married head of household in Valley Springs, Minnehaha, Dakota Territory, United States residing with Sarah and six children.[5]
He served in the Civil War for the Union as Chaplain in the S Company, 54th Infantry, Illinois Regiment.[6][7] He registered on June 7th, 1863 for service in the Seventh Congressional District and stated he was living in Arcola, Douglas, Illinois.[8] He joined 20 Feb 1864 and their history during his service was: Duty at Little Rock till March, 1864. Veterans on furlough March and April. Riot at Charleston, Ill., March 28. Veterans. Moved to Little Rock April 12-30, thence to Brownsville May 18. Pursuit of Shelby May 19-31. Moved to Duvall's Bluff and Clarendon June 25-29. Action at Clarendon June 25-26. Guard Memphis and Little Rock R. R. till August 24. Actions with Shelby, at Jones' Hay Station, Long Prairie and Ashley's Station August 24. Regiment mostly captured, except Companies "F" and "H." Paroled at Jacksonport, Ark., and reached Benton Barracks, Mo., September 9. Exchanged December 5, 1864. Arrived at Hickory Station, on Memphis & Little Rock R. R., January 18, 1865. On railroad guard duty till June 6. Moved to Pine Bluff June 6-9, and duty there till August 18. March to Fort Smith, Ark., August 18-30. Moved to Little Rock, Ark., October 4-6. Mustered out October 15, 1865, and discharged at Camp Butler, Illinois.
John A Palmer filed for a disability pension on 24 Mar 1882 from the Dakota Territory; Lydia filed a claim on 1 Apr 1912 for support of his minor children; and on 9 Nov 1918 she filed a claim for herself.[6]
In the 1880s or 1890s he moved south, divorced Sarah on 23 Mar 1894, at Chancery Court, Tupelo, Lee Co., Mississippi [9], and became Postmaster and married again Lydia Hampton[10][11] and had five more children.[12]
In the 1900 census, Postmaster John (age 62) was the married head of household in Beat 2, Lee, Mississippi, United States.[13]
In the 1910 census, Farmer John (age 71) was the married head of household in Saltillo, Lee, Mississippi, United States residing with Lydia and 4 daughters and a son.[12]
He passed away in early 1912.[6][14] He is buried at Beulah Cemetery in Saltillo, Lee, Mississippi, USA.[14]
