John Palmer emigrated to South Australia in 1838. At the time, he had been living in Lenham, Kent. He was engaged on 04.05.1838 by the agent, G. Whiting, to work for Capt. O'Halloran as a shepherd, 24 pounds a year 3 years, board and lodging 4 pounds additional each year. [1] He arrived in 1838 on the "Rajasthan" with his wife Lucy, both aged 25, and child Emily (there are two records in the Index) [2][3]. [2]
Death
According to some information that I had but have lost, he became a constable, living in Currie Street at the time. He went for a swim in the River Torrens every morning. One morning he never returned and his clothes were found neatly folded with his gold watch on top. He had been speared by the aborigines [4]. He died on 22.02.1839. He is officially recorded as having drowned. [5]. I have not been able to find any account of his death in the newspapers or other records of the time.
