Lois graduated from Commerce High School in Springfield, MA and went to work for Phoenix Insurance in Harford, CT. She met Malcolm Macintosh through his mother who worked in the library at Phoenix. (Lois was a reader.) Mal and Lois lived in Simsbury, CT; West Hartford, CT; Farmington, MI; Old Saybrook, CT; and New Smyrna Beach, FL.

She worked off and on when her children got older and also taught Sunday School at the Universalist Church in West Hartford, served as a Cub Scout Den Mother, helped with fundraising for the Hartford Symphony, belonged to the DAR, and curled with the Detroit Curling Club.

Lois and Malcolm lived in Old Saybrook, CT not far from actress Katherine Hepburn and somehow Lois got invited to Ms. Hepburn's home. She brought her granddaughter Kim who at the time was interested in acting. Ms. Hepburn was very chatty and gave the two Macintoshes a tour of her home.

Lois was always interested in sports and played golf frequently in New Smyrna Beach, twice hitting a hole-in-one. Her neighbors there called her "the librarian" because she was always lending books.
