John Palmer was born at Culmington,Shropshire,England (Wales) 1809.. Was convicted of Horse stealing in 1834 in Salop (Shropshire now) Was shipped out in the "George 111" when 25 and the boat sank in storms in the D'Entrecasteaux channel near Bruney Island (Hobart end)
He was a model convict and conditional parol was granted in 1845 He moved to Five Mile Marsh (aka Eastern Marshes) near Whitefoord where he leased 100 acres from Mr Samuel Page. John was very experienced in soil cultivation and animal husbandry from his time as a farm overseer in England.
John married Martha Sawford at St Peter's Church, Oatlands on 23rd September 1847. [1] They lived in a small cottage now known as "Meadow Banks".
By 1862, they had moved to Burley where John leased a further 800 acres of Crown Land. Their daughter Alice Sawford Palmer is the first child recorded as born at Burley.
Around 1870, John & Martha moved to "Tin Pot Marsh", near Woodsdale.
John and Martha had 14 children, hence 'Palmer' became a prominent family name in the Tasmanian Midlands district.
John Palmer died at Tin Pot Marsh on 21st January 1875 and is buried at the Stanley Street Cemetery in Oatlands. [2]
