Biography

Enlisted in US Civil War August 25, 1861 Born in Ontario Canada, Sept. 25, 1835, Died Goodland Kansas March 29, 1910 Became a naturalized Citizen - Kansas 1836

Sylvester was the son of Cyrenus & Catherine (Conley) Palmer. His mother died in "Upper Canada" when he was 18 months old and his older sister, Lois, helped raise him. He came with his family to Ohio in his youth, married Elizabeth Rummel at Hamilton, Steuben Co., Indiana, Nov. 21, 1858. In 1877 the family moved to Carroll Co., MO where they remained until 1887 when they homesteaded land in Smoky Twp., Sherman County, KS. Sylvester was buried in Goodland Cemetery, Goodland, Sherman County, Kansas, USA


Elizabeth Rummel, born 10 Jun 1839 in Columbiana County, OH, died 02 Jul 1930 in Goodland, Sherman County, KS. On 21 Nov 1858 in Hamilton, Steuben County, IN, married Sylvester F. Palmer, born 05 Sep 1835 in Ontario, Canada, died 30 Mar 1910 in Goodland, Sherman County, KS.


During the Civil War Sylvester served sixteen months as a Pvt., in Company C of the 38th Ohio Vol., Infantry, having enlisted from Stryker, Ohio on 25 Aug 1861. He was discharged because of illness at Nashville, Tennesee. According to his army record he was 5’11”, fair complexion, blue eyes, brown hair. In 1877 he moved his family to butler, DeKalb Co., IN and in 1886 was at Bridge Creek, Carroll Co., Missouri. By 1888/9 he moved his family to Goodland, KS. All of his children went with him except his oldest daughter, Lois Alwida Palmer who married William Joseph Stephens of Carroll Co., MO. The Kansas pioneers lived in sod houses and burned cow chips for fuel in the early years, but today some of the family of acres of wheat land. He resided ten years in Missouri, and settled ten miles south of Goodland in 1887, where he lived until he came to Goodland in 1905. “He was right and just, and withal above reproach.”

Research: War records were searched by his great grandson, A. Max Coppage, who was raised in Hale, Missouri and in 1962 lived at 417 Lynn Ave., Antioch, CA.
