Sylvester was the son of Cyrenus & Catherine (Conley) Palmer. His mother died in "Upper Canada" when he was 18 months old and his older sister, Lois, helped raise him. He came with his family to Ohio in his youth, married Elizabeth Rummel at Hamilton, Steuben Co., Indiana, Nov. 21, 1858. In 1877 the family moved to Carroll Co., MO where they remained until 1887 when they homesteaded land in Smoky Twp., Sherman County, KS. Sylvester was buried in Goodland Cemetery, Goodland, Sherman County, Kansas, USA

During the Civil War Sylvester served sixteen months as a Pvt., in Company C of the 38th Ohio Vol., Infantry, having enlisted from Stryker, Ohio on 25 Aug 1861. He was discharged because of illness at Nashville, Tennesee. According to his army record he was 5’11”, fair complexion, blue eyes, brown hair. In 1877 he moved his family to butler, DeKalb Co., IN and in 1886 was at Bridge Creek, Carroll Co., Missouri. By 1888/9 he moved his family to Goodland, KS. All of his children went with him except his oldest daughter, Lois Alwida Palmer who married William Joseph Stephens of Carroll Co., MO. The Kansas pioneers lived in sod houses and burned cow chips for fuel in the early years, but today some of the family of acres of wheat land. He resided ten years in Missouri, and settled ten miles south of Goodland in 1887, where he lived until he came to Goodland in 1905. “He was right and just, and withal above reproach.”
